The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 61

The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 61

Tunkai’s strategy of setting fire to the center while choking from ten directions.

I sent deep praise in my heart towards the enemy commander.

“That’s amazing.”

This meant that our intelligence network had been completely deceived.

Someone who used such a meticulous strategy couldn’t be ignorant of military tactics.

“Ars! There’s no time to be in awe!” Brother Ferge said desperately. “We need to take an interception stance right away!”

“No, interception won’t work now. We need to go for a ‘Spirit Interception’.”

“Spirit interception!?”

Interception is countering while sitting in place, and spirit interception is countering while advancing forward.

Both are countering, but the tactical meaning is completely different due to the presence or absence of forward movement.

“Coincidentally, we’re positioned at the rear of the formation. If we strike out and counter, a retreat path will naturally open up.”

It wouldn’t be a coincidence.

I thought Dunan had intentionally placed our unit at the rear. Perhaps he had taken out insurance for when he failed.

“Anton, go to the front and urge General Dunan to retreat, and escort him out. Yumir, please scout the forces positioned on the right. If you see any signs of them coming this way, let me know immediately. And Eo, stand at the vanguard and come with me.”

“I’ll go right away.”

“Yes, young master.”

“Yes!”

The vassals moved in perfect unison.

Standing at the vanguard with Eo, I pointed at the approaching enemy and shouted.

“We’ll change the tide of battle. Ars Infantry. Advance!”

The soldiers were bewildered and hesitant, but when Eo, standing at the vanguard, charged in recklessly, they gritted their teeth and followed.

“Haaah!”

Swish! The pure white aura sword gently swept through the necks of four enemy soldiers.

Eo mainly used a sword and shield rather than a spear when she was with Ars, not Wade, in this way.

It was true that sword and shield were more efficient than spear in close combat where soldiers engage in melee, so Eo was wildly cutting down enemy soldiers.

“Heh! Impressive. So that’s Eonia Mirabel, the right hand of the mercenary Wade. We can’t lose either. Felix Heavy Infantry! Crush and kill the enemies!”

Boom! As the heavily armored infantry raised their shields and collided with the enemies, a shock wave like a rock falling echoed.

“What!?”

The opponent was clearly flustered, probably not expecting us to strike out so quickly.

“Your feet must not stop! Push in even if it’s difficult!”

Such a voice echoed from the enemy formation.

‘So the commander is around there…’

I didn’t know who it was, but they seemed to know at least the principles of military tactics.

Not interception that counters while sitting, but spirit interception that counters while striking out.

The reason why spirit interception is the correct answer in this situation is because the opponent approached simultaneously from ten directions.

So if the forces on one side stop moving, disharmony will inevitably occur.

Of course, in this case, there’s a risk of being attacked from the left and right flanks as only we advance forward, but for now, the enemies are also focused on pushing in and encircling us, so we have time.

I decided to use that time to prepare for attacks from the left and right flanks.

“Brother Ferge. Please command the operational unit as I told you earlier.”

“Alright. Where should I go?”

“Please cut down that large tree over there in a downward diagonal direction. And cut down all the trees over there, regardless of the direction. When that’s done, I’ll give additional instructions. Please do it as quickly as possible.”

“Alright. Leave it to me.”

Ferge called 200 soldiers that had been pre-selected.

They were holding logging axes with tense expressions.

Ferge took them and started cutting down and felling trees on the left and right sides of our formation.

Seeing Calliper’s army start cutting trees, Tunkai’s commander, Jagartan, widened his eyes. “Are they planning to narrow the reinforcement routes on the left and right!”

Jagartan swallowed dry saliva at the agile and swift movement of the unit.

‘Who is it? Who on earth is leading that unit in front…!’

He was feeling some kind of pressure.

‘Scary bastard. With this method, he’s planning to devour even the reinforcements from the left and right!’

The guy was cutting down trees to block paths here and there, creating a formation advantageous to himself.

‘Klaus, the boss, watching from afar, can’t notice this. He’ll just order urgent support.’

The opponent knew this and used this kind of strategy.

Jagartan responded relatively quickly. “Gallard! Unian!”

It was indeed a strategy worthy of being called the brain of Klaus’s bandit group.

He was thinking of immediately deploying troops to deal with Ferge’s operational unit heading towards the left and right.

But then.

“…Found you. So you were there?” Ars, who had finally figured out Jagartan’s position while reading Tunkai army’s command system, smiled wickedly.

Ting! The arrow shot by Ars headed towards Jagartan.

Although it was infused with aura, it was shot from afar and wasn’t aimed at a vital point, so it could be easily deflected, but the purpose wasn’t to hit in the first place.

Flutter! A red cloth fluttering at the tip of the arrow.

“What’s this?” While Jagartan was pondering the answer to this question.

Eonia, who had confirmed Ars’ signal, Boom! She pushed away the enemy soldier in front of her with her shield to create distance, then drew the bow she had been carrying on her back.

“Hup…!”

Ting! An arrow fully charged with aura was shot.

Eonia had sufficient range as she had infiltrated into the Tunkai army.

Even so, there were dozens of obstacles between her and Jagartan.

Entangled soldiers, dense trees, birds obstructing the view, falling petals, and so on.

However, the arrow shot by Eonia passed through them exquisitely and then, thwack! It pierced Jagartan’s head.

“Vice Commander Jagartan!”

“Wh-What! Where on earth did that arrow come from…!”

The Tunkai soldiers fell into confusion.

This was an unintended mistake by Klaus Forkner.

Fearing that the Calliper army might try to open an escape route, Klaus had positioned Jagartan, the army’s strategist, at the rear.

He calculated that Jagartan would be able to block the enemy’s retreat with his clever command.

That plan completely fell apart due to the presence of Ars and Eonia, causing cracks in the strategy of the ten-sided ambush.

Following Klaus’s orders, the Tunkai forces on the left and right went to launch a pincer attack on Ars’ unit, but they were already prepared.

“What’s this, why is the path blocked… Argh!”

“It’s an ambush! Gah!?”

The formation changed due to fallen trees.

Spears suddenly protruded from behind those trees to stab them, while troops hidden in the trees attacked from behind.

As even the reinforcements disintegrated, a large escape route finally opened up at the rear of the formation.

“A-Amazing…”

Stina, Ferge’s lover, was watching this scene with her mouth agape.

“It’s exactly as Ferge and Julia said.”

The two of them used to say this about Ars.

─We have a little brother named Ars. That kid will be a treasure that will bring glory to our family in the future.

─Stina, you’d be surprised if you saw our youngest too. He’s really cool, and super smart. The only problem is that he lacks ambition for some reason.

When not being Wade, Ars tried not to stand out as much as possible, but the saying a hero in the bush didn’t come from nowhere fits perfectly.

At least the people who observed him closely consistently held Ars in high regard.

“Miss Stina. From now on, many soldiers will pass through here and start to retreat. Please stand at the entrance of the escape route with brother Ferge and help the wounded soldiers retreat.”

“O-Okay. I will. No, I shall do so!” Stina began to move quickly without objection.

* * *

At the point where the escape route was perfectly opened, Klaus’s scheme could be considered thwarted.

It was because of the fire.

Because of this, once the battlefield fell into a lull, it was difficult for Tunkai’s soldiers to properly pursue.

‘It’s ruined…!’

If they had reduced Calliper’s soldiers significantly, it might have been different, but because the escape route opened too early, they gained almost no advantage.

Moreover, Dunan was quickly ordering a retreat, having received some kind of signal.

“The escape route is open! Everyone retreat! We’re getting out of here!”

The Calliper army started to retreat.

Klaus bit his lip hard and then. “Please help!” He requested help from Grandis.

Grandis, who had been quietly observing the battle situation, grinned and said, “Due to my position, I can’t intervene too conspicuously. Would it be alright if I just deal with the commander directing the retreat, Klaus?”

“That would be sufficient.”

“Then it’s simple. Lexit. Go.”

At that, a beast-man with a fierce expression standing behind him stepped forward, holding a strangely shaped halberd. It was more like a glaive than a halberd.

He glared at where Ars was located while mounting his horse, then began charging in at a terrifying speed.

***

The Calliper army began retreating under Dunan’s orders.

I was maintaining formation and defending the escape route.

‘This minimizes the damage.’

At least it won’t lead to a decisive defeat.

I was watching the soldiers escape.

It would be enough to hold position and wait until the main force at the front came to take over defending the retreat.

But then.

“…!?”

Thump! A chill as if my heart was being gripped.

I instinctively looked in one direction.

A cavalryman with an overwhelming fighting spirit suddenly began approaching me from the 11 o’clock direction.

Yumir and Eo, who were at a distance, reacted first.

“Lord Ars!”

“Young master!”

The two tried to initially stop the approaching cavalryman by aiming at his horse with arrows and daggers.

It was the same method used to kill Calehan, but this time the situation was different.

The opponent who was dismounted rolled on the ground like a beast, then swung his glaive-like halberd with a whoosh! sweeping away the surrounding soldiers like fallen leaves.

I was with those soldiers and quickly raised my spear vertically to block with a clang!! but unable to withstand the force, I was flung back and slammed into a tree.

“Ugh! What is this guy…!”

According to intelligence, there were two fierce commanders in Klaus’s army.

The right-hand man Calehan and the left-hand man Galtan. Among them, Kalehan was killed by me, and Galtan should be fighting with Dunan, so the guy in front of me was a complete irregular.

“Hmph, you managed to block my strike.”

Nevertheless, he seemed unimpressed and tried to finish me off.

“Young master!”

“You bastard, get away!”

Eo and Yumir rushed in simultaneously and engaged in combat with the man.

Yumir with a personal combat power of 93 and Eo equipped with a sword and shield instead of a spear, having a combat power of about 88.

Both were sufficiently high-ranking warriors, yet they couldn’t handle this monster.

“Interesting!” He was smiling with satisfaction, enjoying the battle.

‘This won’t do. At this rate…’

The two will end up being overwhelmed instead.

Since the Calliper army hadn’t fully retreated yet and we needed to buy time, I intervened in the battle between the three.

“Don’t come this way! We’ll handle this guy!”

“No, young master! Quickly go to a safe place!”

The two shouted pleadingly, but I was already on my toes.

“Haaah!”

Kakakakakang! The rapid consecutive strikes, my best attack technique with a spear.

However, the guy was blocking Yumir and Eo’s attacks while pulling his body back, and he skillfully deflected my spear strikes with the armor worn on both elbows and iron shin guards.

A marvelous movement like the embodiment of martial arts.

“What… Huh!?”

Clang! He repelled all three of us at once with a heavy blow.

Every time I blocked his attacks, the iron spear gifted by my master was bending more and more.

‘Even with the three of us attacking, the situation isn’t improving…!’

If that’s the case, there was no choice but to gamble.

“Eo, let’s do what we practiced during training! Yumir, you adjust accordingly!”

“But Lord Ars, that’s…!”

“No arguments!”

“Ugh!”

The part Eo was worried about was because this tactic involved me becoming bait.

First, I charged while thrusting my spear.

“Hmph!”

Whoosh! The guy struck as if swatting a fly.

I gritted my teeth and shouted! then drew the sword in my left hand crossing it with the spear.

‘Chester-style secret technique…! Sun and Moon Fusion!’

Bang! Instead of deflecting with the spear, it was about receiving the attack by crossing the sword and spear, and then capturing the opponent’s weapon.

This was one of the secret techniques of the Chester style, the Sun and Moon Fusion.

“Hm!?”

When his weapon wouldn’t come free, a glint passed through the guy’s eyes.

And then.

“Hyaaah!”

Eo charged at the guy with her shield fully charged with aura.

The guy grabbed the glaive with one hand and was fully prepared to block the attack with the sword he drew from his back with his other hand, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the target.

Crack! Eo struck the middle part of the glaive that I had bound with the edge of her shield. The aura-charged shield became the best blunt weapon, breaking the weapon.

Meanwhile, Yumir appropriately blocked the guy’s sword to prevent Eo from receiving a counterattack.

‘It worked!’

This was a combined technique with Eo that I had used against my master in the past.

Because it was training, it was a technique to destroy the weapon without directly injuring the opponent.

Judging it would be difficult to kill the guy in one go, I decided to use this technique to destroy his weapon.

This proved to be an effective hit.

“You bastards…!!”

The guy showed anger for the first time. He came at us again using his sword.

The level of his swordsmanship was also difficult to handle.

‘Even with this, the situation isn’t improving!’

The battlefield situation also acted as a disadvantage.

As our rear and middle forces retreated quickly, enemy soldiers were all rushing to this location.

If we dragged this out, even if we managed to kill this guy, we would be surrounded and killed by enemy soldiers.

‘Another way…!’

That’s when it happened.

The guy targeted me, the weakest among the three.

I tried to slip away while deflecting his attack, but ping! The sword that couldn’t withstand the attack broke, and the spear was completely bent.

It revealed the gap in our aura levels.

‘Oh no…!’

The monster-like guy rushed at me who had lost my weapons.

Determined to take out at least one of us even at the cost of some injury, he came at me with an attack while getting stabbed in the shoulder by Eo and blocking Yumir’s attack with his forearm.

That attack.

“Get lost.”

Bang! Anton, who had rushed in, roughly knocked it away.

“Ugh!?”

For the first time, the guy was overpowered and sent flying far away.

“Anton!”

“My lord, I apologize for being late.”

Anton, who had been heading towards Dunan at the front.

He raised his weapon, a moon blade, and declared to the guy.

“The crime of attempting to harm my lord. You deserve to die a thousand deaths!”

A dark red aura rippling with anger.

The guy’s expression turned to a sense of crisis at this powerful aura.

“Hyaaah!”

“Guh!?”

Clang! Anton struck the guy hard, preventing him from targeting me.

The guy seemed to have difficulty fully receiving Anton’s attacks with his thin sword and started to be pushed back.

Their confrontation was almost evenly matched.

I wanted to join in and finish the guy off together, but the fact that Anton had come this far meant our time limit was up.

If the vanguard had retreated this far, it meant the enemy forces were right in front of us too.

‘If this continues, we’ll all die.’

However, if we try to escape, that guy will hold us back, and if we try to attack together to kill him, we would not have enough time.

Until now, we were able to face him because he was fighting us head-on, but if four people attack him at once, he’ll feel his life is in danger and will surely evade while fighting.

In that case, we won’t be able to deal with him in a short time.

Anton seemed to know this too, as he said to me, “My lord, I’ll take care of this. Please escape from the battlefield.”

“…!!”

Clearly, there was no other option. Sacrificing one to escape was the only answer in this battle situation.

And that.

He volunteered to take on that role.

“No, it’s only right for the general to handle the aftermath of defeat.” It was Dunan who appeared, his body in tatters.

“You don’t need to handle the aftermath of defeat, Ars Elaine. Withdraw and join the retreating army.”

“General Dunan…”

“Go now.”

It would be foolish to act rashly here.

I immediately ordered Anton to withdraw and decided to escape from the battlefield.

Dunan spoke to me in a low voice.

“…I’m sorry, Wade. I know it’s shameless, but I’ll entrust the army to you.”

Dunan and his close aides remained behind as bait.

Dunan, who ended up directly confronting that monster, seemed prepared to die as he threw off his already half-destroyed armor before charging at the guy.

Lexit is stupifyingly overpowered. Either he’s one of the 10 heroes or he’s got first encounter with villain armor.
