The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 161

The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 161

The ship started its voyage. I asked Kelly to visit each island at our stopovers and conduct inquiries.

I thought we could gather information easily with simple inquiries since these island villages tend to be sensitive about outsiders, but…

‘No results.’

I couldn’t find any information about the other vassals. All I could do was hope for good news from Gunther, who headed in a different direction.

The ship was now scheduled to arrive at a city on the mainland. I decided to go out on deck to clear my stuffy head with some fresh air.

“Mr. Ars? What are you doing?”

It was Kelly, the leader of our group.

He seemed to have something important to discuss with me.

“I was just enjoying the sea breeze for a moment.”

“Haha, you’re a man who knows how to appreciate the finer things.” He approached me as if he was going to offer some counseling and gazed far out at the horizon. “It seems you’re looking for someone.”

“Yes, well. Something like that.”

“Judging by your demeanor, it must be someone very precious to you. I hope you find them soon.”

“Haha… I hope so too, but it looks like it’s going to be a test of patience.”

The number of people I needed to find exceeded 15. I estimated it would take at least a year.

Of course, there were priorities.

My mother, sister Julia. Yumir too, but the top priority was none other than Erina.

She had accompanied us on the trip with a light heart after receiving Estelle’s invitation, but she was alone when that transfer magic activated.

At the time of transfer, my mother was with Aggert, sister Julia with Olaf. Estelle had Master Ilya with her, and although Yumir was pregnant, I could run a hopeful circuit considering her combat power, but not for Erina.

‘Speaking of transfer magic….’

I asked Kelly why we had to travel by ship. I thought that in a place where magic was advanced, long-distance spatial movement should be a given. To this, Kelly gave a bitter smile, asking if I really knew nothing.

“The magic flow in this world is currently incredibly unstable. It’s because of the Magic Continent. The unidentified barrier formed there has disrupted the proper flow of magic that circulates the world.”

He said that as a result, magic that moves through space has also become unstable.

‘So that’s why.’

Now I understood why we were scattered. It wasn’t a problem with the elves’ transfer magic.

For the same reason, he said that communication magic and such are also impossible. It might be possible for short distances, but not for long ones.

Because of this, even in this world where magic is highly developed, people have to travel by carriage or ship, and exchange letters to get news.

‘The situation is quite dire.’

I had to devise a way to find people. I had secretly thought that I might be able to find them instantly through magical communication or spatial movement, but that method was blocked.

“Mr. Ars. About that matter, we might be able to help you.”

“What do you mean…?”

“Join the Salvation Alliance. With your level of skill, our Alliance Leader would welcome you with open arms. We can also help you find people.”

It seems this was the purpose of his approach to me.

‘The Salvation Alliance, huh….’

The Salvation Alliance was a faction with a unique history.

Two hundred years ago, when most kingdoms had fallen and only the Ellan Kingdom remained in the Western Continent.

A breakthrough came with the salvation movement magic passed down by the Great Sage Vindalin.

Backed by this, adventurers swept through dungeons and reclaimed lands, but an unexpected situation arose.

Those adventurers turned their backs on the Ellan Kingdom and declared independence.

After reclaiming the central and northern parts of the Western Continent from monsters, they declared independence and formed a faction called the Salvation Alliance, meaning a union of adventurers who saved the world.

The Ellan Kingdom naturally resisted, but given the chaotic state of the world, it ended up being overlooked.

Thus, the Salvation Alliance occupied the northern part of the Western Continent and even advanced to the Northern Continent, now wielding power comparable to the Ellan Kingdom.

Their method of governance was typical clan rule. Each independent alliance leader has their own territory.

These territories are mostly reclaimed from monsters, but sometimes they’re taken by subjugating other alliances.

As such, strengthening the alliance’s power is the top priority.

That was also the reason Kelly was trying to scout me.

“With your abilities, you could immediately receive the position of a 4th-grade alliance member. Even if that doesn’t work out, you’ll certainly receive good treatment. What do you think?”

It was an attractive offer, but I couldn’t rashly accept it in the current situation where I lacked information.

I politely declined. Kelly looked disappointed but soon snapped that I could do as I pleased and went back inside the ship.

Upon arriving at our destination city, Dispen, I decided to part ways with Kelly’s group immediately.

Not only had Kelly’s attitude turned cold after I rejected the scout offer, but the mage Lunia had also started requesting private meetings, perhaps due to my overly friendly approach in trying to extract information.

So, I decided to conduct only a brief investigation in the port city of Dispen and move immediately to an inland city.

The destination was Ramdamen, the largest city in the Northern Continent.

I thought that if any vassals had fallen in the Northern Continent, they would come to the biggest city like I did.

However, it seemed no one had grasped the situation as quickly as I had, as my inquiries in Ramdamen yielded no immediate results.

‘Can’t be helped. I’ll have to wait for now.’

Finding people is a test of patience. I composed my anxious heart and set out to find lodging.

* * *

After staying in Ramdamen for two weeks.

I was frequenting the city library, learning the language and gathering information about magic.

What I learned as a result was that learning magic isn’t particularly difficult.

There are five major institutions that specialize in magic education.

The first is the Royal Academy of the Ellan Kingdom. This is an elite educational institution for those born with magical talent and those with achievements.

The second is the United Academy of the Salvation Alliance. This is also an elite educational institution, attended by skilled magicians of the Salvation Alliance and talented young people.

These two educational institutions are state-led, and the age range of academy students is said to be diverse, from 10 to 90 years old.

The rest are affiliated or private institutions.

The third is the independent academies in small cities, the fourth is private academies established by adventurer groups and mercenary magicians under their own names.

And the fifth and final one is the part-time academy for ordinary people.

It’s a small academy that allows working people to learn magic in their spare time, a kind of welfare institution for those who lack time or money for magic studies.

Perhaps because of this, the facilities were terribly poor.

“Wow….”

For a moment, I wondered if I had come to the wrong place.

The place I went to, which was called an academy, was a dilapidated two-story building that looked like it was about to collapse.

Thinking this couldn’t be it, I opened the door and entered, only to be greeted by an old man who looked well over 80.

“Welcome~. Have you come to learn magic?”

“Ah…. Yes. I came to learn about the basics. If you don’t mind me asking, you are…?”

The old man introduced himself as the person in charge of this academy and suddenly started coughing as if he was about to die.

“Are, are you alright!?”

He coughed so badly that I had to hurriedly support him.

“I’m fine. It happens all the time. More importantly, you said you wanted to know the basics, right? Where would you like to start?”

The old man continued speaking nonchalantly. I thought this person might be an unexpected big shot.

The old man pulled a book from the bookshelf with trembling hands.

“You see, magic is…”

The old man started explaining magic in detail. Most of it was content I already knew from reading books in the library.

The magic in this world is composed of various attributes, he said.

The main ones are fire, water, earth, wind, light, darkness, time, and space. And then there are their sub-attributes.

For example, lightning is a sub-attribute of wind, and ice is a sub-attribute of water.

Anyway, when you add them all up, there are about 20 attributes, and generally, one person is born with 2-3 attributes.

Even if you are born with good attributes, it means nothing without talent.

Exceptional potential magicians are those who are born with attributes and have outstanding talent for those attributes.

The old man says, “No need to worry if you don’t have talent. Just learn enough to protect yourself.”

That was the purpose of this academy. A place for ordinary people to learn just enough magic to protect themselves.

However, hardly anyone sought it out.

Despite being an academy for people lacking money, it was still quite expensive to attend comfortably.

They say it’s better to get books and study on your own.

I was planning to self-study too, but I had to visit to gauge my innate attributes and their potential.

“Then, shall we find out what attributes you have?”

The old man said this and began casting some kind of magic.

Then, a faintly glowing magical sphere appeared in front of him.

“Place your hand on that.”

Following his instructions, I put my hand on the sphere, and it squirmed and reacted.

“Oh, quite a strong reaction. Let’s interpret this.”

The old man closes his eyes and concentrates again.

Soon he exclaimed, “This is… Light! Such brilliant and powerful light! It’s unbelievable!”

I thought it might be the attribute that the protagonist Ars was born with.

“Is that the only one?”

“Hmm, it seems so.”

I was a bit disappointed.

I was secretly hoping for several attributes to appear.

Of course, having many attributes isn’t necessarily good. It’s said that magicians with a single attribute are actually more likely to achieve greatness.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Having multiple attributes often leads to mediocrity.

‘But even if it’s light magic…’

I couldn’t grasp how I could apply it.

“Amazing, how can there be such brilliant light… It rivals that of a saint…”

The old man, who had been sensing my magical power with his eyes closed, suddenly furrowed his brow.

“What’s this? Something else within the light…?”

He was concentrating, his face contorted. It seemed to be quite a strain, as he was even sweating.

“This is… Arcane! Incredible! Such highly concentrated arcane power hidden within that brilliant light!”

I thought this might be my innate attribute.

If Ars had light, then I had arcane.

“This is just… Woah!”

The old man winced as if blinded, despite his eyes being closed.

His expression changed to one of ecstasy.

From my perspective, it looked like he was putting on a show, but the old man remained serious throughout.

When he finally opened his eyes, his gaze towards me had completely changed.

“Y-you. What exactly are you?”

“Even if you ask me that… So, is it correct to understand that my innate attributes are light and arcane?”

“Y-yes.”

“Thank you. I’ll leave the payment here.”

Now that I knew my attributes, I could study on my own.

Thinking this, I stood up, but the old man hurriedly stopped me.

“Wait!”

The old man licked his lips and said, “I’ll write you a letter of recommendation. I’ll also put in a word for you to receive a scholarship. So, would you consider going to the Royal Academy?”

“The Royal Academy…?”

The largest comprehensive academy located in Baien, the capital of the Ellan Kingdom in the Western Continent.

It was an extremely attractive offer, especially since Baien was where Gunther and I had agreed to make our base.

However, I wanted to search for more people in the Northern Continent before heading straight to Baien. I also thought I could quickly earn money on my own.

Noticing my hesitation, the old man hastily added, “Don’t worry! I’ll give you plenty of time to think about it. You don’t have to decide right away. Just promise me you won’t go to any other academy… Say, the Salvation Alliance’s academy.”

I could tell at a glance that this old man was from the Kingdom. I didn’t know why he was working in the Salvation Alliance’s territory, though.

“…Alright. I’ll think about it.”

An academy, huh.

I thought I’d have no connection to academies after Fensillon Academy closed.

No, even at Fensillon Academy, it was hard to consider me a simple student due to my status as Wade.

The students around me couldn’t easily approach me, nor did they try to.

It was hard to call that a proper academy experience.

And now, to enter an academy in this form.

Here, I was neither Wade nor even a noble. Just an ordinary student.

Moreover, this was a magic academy.

I couldn’t even imagine what would happen.
