The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 10

After finishing that butler training, I returned to my territory and had to transfer my affiliation to the Julia Academy located in the Hellian Duchy.

Although I had to abruptly transfer schools, there were many kids in a similar situation, so it wasn’t too difficult.

I steadily collected information on the Seven vassals while finishing my first year at the middle academy.

And so when I turned 15 and became an adult, I gained duties as well.

It was to assist my father in running the territory.

I wanted to just keep training martial arts with Master Ilya, but since master had recently taken on a mercenary request and was away, I was dejectedly handling territory affairs.

“My lord, the logging camp requests additional manpower. Here are the current personnel and wage details.”

“You’ve organized it first, I see. Hmm, winter is coming soon, so we’ll need more lumberjacks. Instead of blindly hiring more, let’s pull some lumberjacks from the sawmill or carpentry shop first. There are many experienced lumberjacks there.”

“Yes, I’ll pass that on. That concludes today’s work. You worked hard, my lord.”

“Phew! Thanks Yumir. If you weren’t here, I might have collapsed.”

She helps with work, spars with me, and brings me snacks on time.

Having an all-capable maid character that I’d only seen in games actually by my side was incredibly reassuring.

As I was wrapping up my work, my father knocked on my office door.

“Seems like you’re doing well.”

“Father. Please come in. Did you need something?”

“No, no business. I just wanted to give you some encouragement.”

“Yes?”

“There’s a lot of praise among the territory’s people. They say your work processing is fair and smooth.”

“I’m just following principles, that’s all.”

“That’s why it’s difficult. Speaking of which, your coming-of-age ceremony is approaching. Did you want anything in particular as a gift?”

“Nothing special like that. Just gift me a book.”

“I figured you’d say that. I’ll tell you ahead of time without beating around the bush – I’ve prepared a formal suit for you to wear to the party. You’re now of age to make your debut in high society.”

“I wonder if there will even be a party hall to attend?”

The life of nobles made one imagine glamorous parties, but the reality was harsh.

Houses without anything to show off were simply never invited to parties.

Even my elder brother Max was only invited to parties once a year at most.

And those weren’t large-scale parties either.

“We’ll have to see about that. In any case, let’s have a stylish coming-of-age ceremony after your officer training.”

“Yes, I look forward to it.”

The coming-of-age ceremony was approaching. It may just be formality, but they say it’s an incredibly meaningful event for nobles.

I was supposed to receive congratulatory gifts not just from family, but acquaintances like Master Ilya and Yumir, so I was looking forward to it.

But before that was the officer training at the academy.

Once academy officer cadets become adults, they undergo various training experiences.

War is not just theory, after all.

So after becoming adults, they are regularly dispatched to field sites, which are mostly front lines.

The Julia Academy officer cadets had been assigned to the western front where our neighbor Alvard Kingdom was entrenched in a standoff.

It was an actual battlefield, so there were dangers, but there was a continental treaty that required unconditional release of any captured cadets under 20 years old.

So normally the cadets’ lives were insured to a minimum degree by this treaty.

Of course, they could still die in battle, or be captured as prisoners and killed without anyone knowing.  So it wasn’t complete protection.

As such, in most cases the cadets would withdraw to the rear when actual combat broke out.

“Still, stay completely alert.”

My mother kept warning me sternly as I was leaving, and even that wasn’t enough as she hugged me tightly not wanting to let go.

My father just shook his head.

“That’s enough. Ars isn’t a child anymore, so send him off with peace of mind.”

“But you…”

“It’ll be fine.”

Finally letting me go after my father’s reassurance, my mother handed me a helmet as if giving me a charm.

“It belonged to my brother who was an excellent officer. It will surely protect you.”

“Haha, Mother. I’m not going to be an officer. I won’t need to use a personal helmet.”

“So…?”

“But I’ll take it just in case. You never know.”

The chestnut-colored helmet seemed well-maintained, with a brilliant luster.

I put the helmet in my luggage and headed to Foldick, where the officer training would take place, seeing my family off.

***

In FoldicK, the western front where the confrontation with the Alvard Kingdom is taking place.

“Gentlemen. Welcome to the Foldick Front.”

The one who said that was Iron Heart, the Army’s Deputy Commander.

“I hope you will learn a lot here. For now, I have assigned each of you to a unit, so check it and greet your fellow unit members. And there will be a camp meeting tomorrow. Some of you will also attend that camp meeting. In principle, you do have the right to speak… But I think it’s better for you to stay quiet. That’s all.”

The 74 cadets from our Julia Academy received their unit assignment sheets.

I was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division, a multi-purpose infantry unit. The memory of being assigned to a unit long ago came back, making me feel strange.

In any case, after receiving my assignment, I was going to move with the other cadets, but it seemed that some were receiving special treatment.

Iron Heart glanced at the note he had brought and said, “Casper Millias, Joshua Herald. You two, stay. The General wants to meet you.”

Millias, a prodigy from the powerful Marquis Millias family, and Herald, the second son of the Count Herald family. These two from influential noble families seemed to receive special treatment.

Of course, I was just a small fry baron.

After the past chess match, I had refrained from drawing attention as much as possible, and my abilities were not revealed in the attempted kidnapping of the Duke Saleon’s family either.

At that time, I did use aura, but the only one who saw it directly was Erina.

Since the duke Saleon family did not disclose the details of the attempted kidnapping incident, nothing about me was known.

“Damn, those noble kids really are different.”

A fellow cadet muttered, and Bannings from the Viscount’s family spoke to me.[1]

“Ars, which unit are you in?”

“The 5th Infantry. They say it’s a multi-purpose unit?”

“Yikes, you drew the short straw. They say it’s called a multi-purpose unit, but it’s mainly made up of mercenaries. Mercenaries don’t look favorably upon noble cadets and don’t follow orders well.”

“Really? What unit were you assigned to?”

“The 2nd Artillery Unit. It’s a relatively easy unit. As a cadet, I just need to pay attention to equipment maintenance.”

I walked around the camp with Bannings to check out the system.

‘Is this really the battlefield?’

Seeing it in person after only pictures and videos was a different feeling.

As I walked around checking the unit markings, I was able to arrive at the 5th Infantry Division.

I was about to salute the commander of the 5th Infantry Division properly, but…

“…Huh?”

That was all I could react with.

“Come in, Ars. I’ve been waiting for you.”

It was because my master Ilya welcomed me as the commander of the 5th Infantry Division.

“Master?! Why are you here…!”

It may not be so surprising. She had gone to the battlefield as a mercenary before.

Currently, the confrontation between the Calliper Kingdom and Alvard is only taking place on the western and northwestern fronts. It’s not strange for my master to be here.

“Heh, I didn’t expect you’d come here for training.”

“What an incredible coincidence. Moreover, to be assigned to your unit, master.”

“No, it’s not a coincidence that you were assigned to this unit.”

“Huh?”

I soon learned the reason.

“Our little bro is here!”

A woman hugged me from behind.

Julia Elaine, the fourth child and eldest daughter of my family. As an administrative officer, she had recommended me for this unit.

“Sis… I knew Big Bro Ferge was here, but I didn’t know you were here too, Sis.”

“Heheh, I told father not to tell you. I wanted to surprise you.”

“Oh geez.”

My sister Julia has always been cheerful, which is both a strength and weakness.

She didn’t care about the gazes around her and wouldn’t let go of me. In this aspect, she resembled my mother a lot.

“Our youngest. Is it 6 months since we last met? You’ve become more handsome!”

“Sister. Please don’t call me the youngest in front of others.”

“Why? Are you saying that because you’ve become an adult? Unfortunately, you’ll always be the youngest! If you’re upset, tell father and mother to scold me!”

“What kind of talk is that…”

After barely managing to get her off from pinching my cheeks, I was told the whole story.

“What’s the big deal? The officer candidates are coming for field training, so I’ve prepared for it. What do you think my job is?”

“The administrative officer of the unit… So that’s what you’ve become.”

My sister, who knew the relationship between my master and me, had me assigned to this multi-purpose unit.

Moreover, she wasn’t the only one here.

“Restrain yourself, Julia. Can’t you see that Ars is feeling awkward?”

The one who said that while approaching was Ferge Elaine, the third son of the family.

He was Julia’s twin brother and held the position of a unit officer leading 500 soldiers.

“Brother Ferge is here too.”

“Yes, welcome Ars to the 5th Infantry Division. It’s quite a unique and rugged unit, but you’ll learn a lot from it.”

“Yes, I’ll learn a lot.”

After a light chat with acquaintances, I received a briefing on the current state of the unit from Brother Ferge.

The 5th Infantry Division, a multi-purpose unit, consisted of about 1,000 soldiers – around 500 mercenaries and 500 regulars.

The nominal commander was my master, who held the position of an infantry division commander in military terms.

Poke poke!

Sister Julia whispered to me while poking my side.

“Miss Ilya is really amazing. She’s the first woman to reach the rank of S-class mercenary in just 2 years. The kingdom is officially offering her a commission as a key officer. And yet she’s still continuing to be your private tutor… Oh, our youngest is really blessed!”

“Haha…”

I could only feel grateful for that part.

I heard that a certain marquis offered her 20 times the salary our family is currently receiving, but she still declined.

‘I’ll have to repay her later.’

Since I planned to be with my master for a long time, I intended to repay all the favors I’ve received from her.

After receiving the report on the state of the unit, I was briefed on the current military situation.

The number of Alvard Kingdom troops we’re facing is a whopping 10,000.

And they were the renowned 3rd Corps, known as an elite force.

“Our military force facing them is also 10,000. But our terrain as the defenders is far superior. That’s why those Alvard bastards can’t approach us. Anyways, we’ve been in a stalemate for two months.”

Brother Ferge scratched his head, saying the situation was tedious.

As I examined the terrain map, I raised one question.

“If it’s the 3rd Corps of Alvard, isn’t it the army commanded by the Four Marshals, Ushis Goldray? I heard his specialty is defense.”

“You’ve studied well, haven’t you?”

“Ah, yes. Something like that.”

“You’re right. Ushis is in the enemy camp. That’s why our military urgently hired a large number of mercenaries to respond quickly. Well, despite that, there hasn’t been much movement, so the higher-ups think Alvard Kingdom has a different intention elsewhere.”

“What intention is that?”

“We don’t know yet. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Ushis Goldray.

In the Athena War Tales game, he was an R-rank character card known for being cost-effective to enhance in the early stages.

Of course, his cost-effectiveness was only good in the early game; no one used him in the late game as he became mediocre.

He was a character only hardcore players like me would use.

‘Ushis’ main strategy is an impregnable defense…’

His unbreakable defensive power was absolute.

‘Thinking about it, it is indeed strange.’

Alvard Kingdom mobilized its military forces to invade. And yet, they dispatched an army specialized in defense.

It was hard not to think that they had a different, blatant intention.
