I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.
Chapter 23.
Slap!
Gilbert slapped his subordinate’s cheek.
“What? You say Caesar might have met Dominic? Did they meet or not?”
“I’m, I’m sorry! I still don’t know for sure. The Clearbay police are reluctant to meet with us…”
“None of you, not a single one is competent! Damn it all!”
At Gilbert’s outburst, all the organization members flinched and bowed their heads low.
“Find out right now when they met. And what they talked about too! Now!”
“Yes, sir! Right away!”
The members scattered like cockroaches encountering light.
Gilbert chugged alcohol straight from the bottle, then threw it against the wall.
“Goddamn bastards. What am I supposed to do, trusting these idiots…”
Gilbert rubbed his face, deep in thought.
If by any chance Dominic had spilled all of Bloody Gold’s secret hideouts and business locations to Caesar, it would be over.
“How did it come to this… I can’t let everything fall apart because of one damn wandering knight.”
He couldn’t ask for help from other mafia guys either.
Those bastards would rather tear Gilbert apart like wolves if they saw any sign of weakness.
That’s how this world works.
That’s how Gilbert has survived.
“…I have no choice.”
Gilbert got on a carriage.
“Uh, where should I take you?”
“Sapientia. The blue roof.”
He couldn’t die pathetically like Vito.
But he couldn’t leave Homigraph either.
Homigraph was a land that held more value than a hometown for Gilbert.
Whether nobles, representatives, or politicians, they acted all nice when taking money from Gilbert and his father like pigs, but turned around and badmouthed them behind their backs.
That’s why Gilbert dreamed of becoming a representative.
For Gilbert, who had always received contempt and disgust, the position of representative was proof of human triumph and the most satisfying revenge against those who looked down on him.
He was just one step away from achieving that dream, but because of some bizarre knight, everything he had built was about to crumble like a sand castle.
Gilbert simply couldn’t stand by and watch that happen.
“We, we’ve arrived, Sir Gilbert.”
Gilbert flung open the carriage door and got out.
A massive cement wall plastered white, seemingly insurmountable, greeted Gilbert.
Tilting his head back further to look up, he saw the Blue roof glistening in the moonlight.
Gilbert approached the guards protecting the mansion gate.
“Tell the Viscount that Gilbert is here.”
The guards glared at Gilbert before speaking.
“The Viscount is currently unavailable. Make an appointment and come back.”
Gilbert poked the guards’ forehead as he spoke.
“You know the money that pays you comes from my pocket, right? Open the gate if you don’t want to end up on the streets right now.”
The guards briefly exchanged glances and then sighed.
“Wait here.”
One guard went through the mansion gate.
A moment later, the guard came out and said,
“You may enter.”
***
Gilbert went to the mansion garden.
There he saw a man with light brown hair playing hide-and-seek with beautiful women in the garden pool.
“Viscount. I’m over here”
“Where are you?”
“Here, over here~”
The man was clearly playing hide-and-seek with the beauties despite having seen Gilbert arrive.
Gilbert’s insides boiled with anger, but he held it in.
Although the nobility’s authority had hit rock bottom, this bastard’s family was a legitimate one that had been rooted in Sapientia since its inception.
That alone made him impossible to ignore, and being a noble on top of that meant even the haughty Walterwood family cowered before him.
“Got you!”
The Viscount removed his blindfold as soon as he caught the woman.
After playing with the woman for a while, the Viscount noticed Gilbert and smiled.
“Oh! Gilbert! It’s been a while. How have you been?”
“…I’ve been well, thanks to Viscount Duken’s care. But I have a favor to ask, could you spare me a moment?”
“Just a moment, just a moment.”
Viscount Duken staggered out of the pool.
A guard draped clothes over the Viscount’s body and put a cigar in his mouth.
“Phew”
The Viscount blew smoke in Gilbert’s face.
However, Gilbert didn’t say a word and endured it.
“So, what do you want to say? Gilbert?”
“Please kill Caesar.”
As soon as Viscount Duken heard Gilbert’s words, his eyes widened, and he laughed loudly.
“Hahahahaha! You want me to kill that guy who’s called the axe or god of Homigraph?!”
Click!
As Viscount Duken made a gun shape with his hand, his bracelet transformed into a revolver.
Viscount Duken pressed the muzzle against Gilbert’s jowl as he spoke.
“Because you idiots did something stupid, all my business has come to a complete stop too. And now you have the audacity to say such a thing? Shouldn’t you be on your knees apologizing instead?”
Despite Viscount Duken’s fierce glare, Gilbert didn’t cower.
“I’ve been laundering Viscount Duken’s money and procuring beautiful women and delicious alcohol from all over the world to ask for favors like this when complicated situations arise.”
Gilbert knelt down.
“So please kill Caesar. I beg you.”
“You pig bastard, are you trying to mess with me? If I step in directly, it’ll reveal that I’m involved with you guys. Do you want to die?”
“But are you going to leave Caesar alone? He’s someone who will eventually ruin Viscount Duken’s business too. After we’ve all been taken down, you’ll eventually have to step in yourself, Viscount.”
“I’ll think about that after you guys are all dead. Now get lost.”
“Then the money Viscount Duken entrusted to me. That will disappear too.”
Viscount Duken’s eyes became as sharp as a ghost’s.
“What? Say that again.”
“My close associate who was recently caught by Caesar knows the location of Viscount Duken’s assets. Of course, he thinks all the money in there is mine. But the moment he spills the location of that money, it will become the property of Caesar or Homigraph.”
Gilbert banged his head on the floor.
“So I beg you. Please take care of Caesar. This is not just for me, but also for your sake, Viscount Duken.”
Viscount Duken stepped on Gilbert’s head, pressing it down.
“To think I worked with such bastards. It’s unbelievable.”
Gilbert’s forehead was crushed against the stone floor, blood trickling out.
But Gilbert endured it without making a sound.
If this guy could just kill that bastard, he could endure even worse humiliation than this.
Viscount Duken waved his hand, and the guards brought a black briefcase.
Viscount Duken took out a prosthetic arm from the briefcase.
“This is a prosthetic arm developed for knights who have lost their arms. It’s a low-grade product that can’t emit aura, but it has some pretty useful magic in it.”
Viscount Duken dropped the prosthetic arm in front of Gilbert.
“Use this to kill Caesar yourself. I don’t know how strong Caesar is, but he’ll be useless against magic.”
Gilbert respectfully accepted the prosthetic arm.
“Thank you.”
“Of course you should be grateful. I’m going to make you as strong as a knight.”
“…What?”
The guards grabbed Gilbert’s arms and legs.
“Let go! Let go of me! Viscount?! Viscount?!”
Gilbert resisted with all his might, but he couldn’t overcome the guards.
When Viscount Duken spread his hand, the revolver transformed into a dagger.
Viscount Duken sat on Gilbert’s stomach and said,
“How great. You can kill your enemy Caesar yourself, and become as strong as a knight. I wonder if there’s anyone as kind as me.”
“Aaaaaargh! I don’t need it! I don’t need it!”
A cold bloodlust seeped into Viscount Duken’s eyes.
“Did you think you could threaten me and walk away unscathed? Gilbert?”
The dagger slowly dug into Gilbert’s forearm.
“Relax. It’s my first time cutting off a living person’s arm. If I measure wrong, I might have to cut twice.”
“Viscount Dukeeeeen!”
Gilbert’s scream echoed in the air.
***
Caesar finally moved into a house.
It’s not that he didn’t like the hotel, but just having his own home made him smile automatically.
So Caesar decided to celebrate by inviting all the new family members for a barbecue party.
“So what’s your name?”
“Sam!”
“How old are you?”
“I’m 10!”
“Wow, look at that strong voice. You’re general material, general material. This won’t do.”
As Caesar opened his wallet, Jake quickly ran over.
“Ce-Caesar, sir. Our son is fine.”
“Hey now! When an adult wants to give pocket money, what’s not okay about that? Come here, Sam.”
Caesar handed two 10 del bills to Sam.
“Give one to your shy little brother, and keep one for yourself.”
“Thank you!”
When Sam received the pocket money, the other kids’ eyes sparkled too.
There were children of the bodyguards, and even Harrison’s children among them.
He had thought Harrison would be married, but he was so surprised when he brought a son who looked exactly like him.
Caesar took out some bills and said,
“Who else wants pocket money!”
“Me! Me!”
Yeah, this is why I give pocket money.
While Caesar was handing out pocket money to the kids one by one, Harrison handed him a small note and whispered,
“It’s a message from Councilman Walterwood.”
“Wow, the timing is impeccable.”
[Today at 7 PM. Anti-terror training begins.]
Caesar handed the note back to Harrison and said,
“Where do you see someone sending a note just an hour in advance.”
“What are you planning to do?”
“They’ve danced to my tune, so I should dance enthusiastically too.”
Caesar put a piece of meat in his mouth and said,
“I’m going out for a bit. Have fun while I’m gone.”
Jake, Knox, and the bodyguards quickly spoke up.
“Do you need anything?”
“I don’t need anything. I’ll handle it myself. Oh, try to have all the kids sleep over here today. Don’t go outside unnecessarily.”
“Yes, understood.”
Caesar went into the mansion, got dressed properly, and packed his axe and space distortion bag.
And reflexively, he was about to go to the main entrance but stopped.
“Oh right.”
The kids are there.
Caesar went out through the emergency exit in the backyard.
Caesar went to the riverside and got on a prepared boat.
It wasn’t a motorboat, but it didn’t matter since Caesar’s two arms were as fast as a motor.
Caesar rowed the boat along the river towards the Eastline.
Since the river flowed from Westline to Eastline, the boat moved swiftly as if it had caught a tailwind.
Passing the drawbridge that was no longer so amazing, after rowing hard for about an hour, he arrived at Eastline where factory wastewater continuously flowed out.
“Perfect timing.”
7 PM.
Bang!
With the sunset, gunshots rang out all over the Eastline.
By now, the police should be busy raiding Gilbert’s secret business locations.
Meanwhile, what Caesar needs to aim for is Gilbert’s secret vault.
Caesar plans to empty that vault completely and then visit the safe houses Gilbert owns one by one like Santa Claus.
And finally, he’ll find Gilbert and crack his head for a perfect finish.
Caesar hid the boat in a suitable place.
“Shall we go?”
Caesar ran towards the Eastline where gunshots were raining down.
***
“Surrender!”
“Sh-shut up!”
The members of Bloody Gold resisted fiercely.
The main reason the police couldn’t eradicate the mafia was because they didn’t know where the mafia guys were hiding.
But now they knew where the mafia guys were hiding, so there was nothing to fear.
The police set up mortars and loaded shells into the muzzles.
Thump! Boom!
The mafia members who were staging a sit-in right in front of the building entrance were torn to shreds.
Some who barely escaped the blast were staggering, unable to regain their senses due to the deafening sound.
The police rushed in through that gap.
“Don’t think about capturing them alive, kill them all!”
The police opened indiscriminate fire on the Bloody Gold members.
The mafia, caught off guard by the surprise police attack, were either killed while resisting or busy trying to escape.
After killing all the mafia members, the police looked around.
“What the hell is this place anyway?”
It was clearly labeled as a food warehouse, but no matter how much they searched, it didn’t look like one.
There wasn’t even a hint of common grains like wheat or beans.
“Chief Ren! Look over here!”
As they moved objects around, a secret door leading to the floor below appeared.
“Open it quickly.”
The police opened the door.
Immediately, a stench so foul it made them want to rip their noses off wafted out.
“Wh-what should we do?”
“What do you mean what? Put on gas masks and get in there!”
When the police entered wearing gas masks, they saw unbelievable scenes.
“These… Crazy bastards.”
Inside were children, chained by their necks, sprawled about.
The children’s bodies were so emaciated from starvation that their bones were visible.
Ren came inside to assess the situation and shouted.
“What are you doing?! Save them immediately!”
The police cut the chains with saws and rescued the children.
Ren personally participated in rescuing the children.
Ren came out holding one child.
After removing his gas mask, he checked the child’s condition.
The heart was beating, and the child was breathing.
“Oh God…”
Along with a sense of relief, he suddenly saw an overlap with his own daughter from when she was young in this child.
Ren hugged the child tightly.
“What on earth have I been doing…?”
Ren began to feel nauseous, disgusted by the alcohol and money he had taken from the mafia.
***
The Bloody Gold hideout was in chaos.
The members who barely made it back alive approached the vice-boss.
“Marcus! What do we do now?”
“What about Gilbert? When is Gilbert coming back?!”
Marcus clutched his head and said,
“Damn it, I don’t know either! He hasn’t been seen since he went to Sapientia four days ago!”
“Are we… Abandoned?”
“Damn…”
That pig might have made some kind of deal with Viscount Duken to save his own skin.
Marcus rubbed his face and opened his mouth.
“Pack everything. We’re leaving Homigraph.”
“What? If Gilbert finds out…”
“Gilbert is gone. We need to pack everything and leave Homigraph immediately if we want to live…”
Thwack!
Suddenly, Marcus’s head disappeared.
It wasn’t an axe that flew in, nor was there a gunshot sound.
Gilbert appeared in front of the fallen Marcus in the blink of an eye.
In Gilbert’s right hand was Marcus’s severed head.
“Huh… You’re trying to run away?”
Crackle Crackle.
All the members stared at Gilbert’s right hand.
There was a bizarre prosthetic hand with blue currents flowing through it.
“If you try to escape Homigraph, you’ll die by my hand first. All of you, stand and fight.”
“B-boss… B-but the police know all our business locations…”
“Then kill all the police. Then there’s nothing to fear, right?”
Bang Bang Bang.
At that moment, gunshots were heard from far away in the hideout.
“There they are! It’s those Bloody Gold bastards!”
“Aaaagh!”
The members standing guard outside were being killed.
The members were torn between running away or fighting as Gilbert ordered.
Then, Gilbert pressed a yellow button protruding from the forearm of his prosthetic hand and clenched his fist.
Whirr.
As the prosthetic hand activated, Gilbert felt as if time had slowed down for him alone.
Gilbert ran towards the police.
He was so fast that to the police, it looked like a blue light was approaching rather than Gilbert.
“Wha-“
Thwack!
Gilbert struck a policeman’s head.
The policeman’s head disappeared entirely.
“Aaaagh!”
Other police officers pulled their triggers, but the bullets didn’t reach Gilbert.
A shield surrounding Gilbert’s body deflected all the bullets.
Gilbert rushed towards the police and smashed their heads.
Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.
After crushing the head of the last remaining police officer, Gilbert glared at his members.
“What are you doing? Fight now!”
“Y-yes!”
All the members grabbed their weapons and went outside.
As excruciating pain swept through his entire body, Gilbert frowned and injected himself with a syringe.
“Hah…”
As the pain subsided, his thirst for revenge boiled up again.
Gilbert caressed his blood-stained prosthetic hand and looked up at the moon.
“Caesar… I’ll kill you myself.”
Gilbert’s eyes began to gradually turn a pale purple color.
