I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.

Chapter 16

Harrison nervously boarded the carriage.

An elderly man with intense, tiger-like eyes that exuded powerful charisma through his gaze looked at Harrison.

That old man was Harrison’s father.

Gregory Walterwood.

Harrison bowed his head. “Councilman Walterwood. How have you been?”

Gregory glanced at Harrison for a moment before turning his eyes back to his newspaper. “Not bad. You look healthier too, must be the good country air you’ve been breathing.”

Harrison felt a surge of emotion but suppressed it and took his seat.

A long silence ensued.

Gregory didn’t like having his concentration broken when he was in the middle of reading something.

It was his belief that the higher one’s position, the more one should always allocate time for concentration and contemplation.

The carriage passed over the drawbridge and left Sapientia.

Only then did Gregory fold his newspaper and look at Harrison. “I heard you found a new master. I assume you have no intention of returning to the Walterwood family?”

Harrison uttered the words he had been holding back. “I was never interested in the position of head of the Walterwood family in the first place.”

“But your brothers were wary of you. Your first mistake was not noticing that, and your second mistake was coming to me for help immediately without devising any countermeasures.”

What a nasty old man.

He didn’t have an ounce of affection for his children.

He was only obsessed with finding the right bloodline to properly inherit the Walterwood family, not caring at all whether his own child was dragged off to the battlefield or not.

He might have even thought it was better to be able to prune away the obsolete ones.

“Of course, I didn’t think you were meant to rot forever in the position of sheriff. But I never thought you’d end up crawling between the legs of a mere human butcher.” Gregory tossed a photograph.

It was a scene of Caesar giving a speech in front of the Hilton Hotel.

“Caesar Sylvatil. I’ve heard he’s the illegitimate son of a Baron family and a former knight, but he’s quick-tempered and hot-blooded. Such a person can’t rise high.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“I blocked his gold from flowing to the Parker family once, as you requested. But that’s the end of it. I’ll see how capable your master’s vessel is and how excellent your abilities are.”

It was as if a door had opened.

It was in front of the Hilton Hotel where Caesar lived.

“I’ll give you three days. Bring me an answer within that time. Otherwise, I’ll have no choice but to accept the Parker family’s offer.”

“…I understand.” Harrison got off the carriage and bowed his head to Gregory. “Take care.”

Gregory ignored Harrison without even a light greeting… And the carriage departed.

Harrison’s fist trembled.

***

Caesar met people according to his scheduled morning routine.

“Sir Caesar. If not now, there really won’t be a good time to sell. Currently, gold excavated from the demon realm is continuously surfacing. Moreover, with news that the war will end soon, the price of gold is falling endlessly.”

The middle-aged man tried to persuade Caesar, spitting as he spoke.

Just like the other guys he had met so far.

“Even the Imperial government is currently discussing how to dispose of the gold excavated from the demon realm. They say it’s suitable for making artifacts due to its high magic content! The moment that gold arrives in Homigraph, the price of gold will plummet.”

“So when do you think I should sell?”

“Now! You must sell without fail within three days at the latest! If you go through our Becky Distribution Company, we can guarantee selling everything for over 500 del!”

Caesar took a sip of his tea.

“Is that so? Fabio Corporation said they would do it for 550 del.”

“Those guys are absolutely untrustworthy! They’ve never even handled gold before. Recently, there were issues with the quality of the coal they mainly transport, causing factories on the East Line to shut down. You absolutely must not deal with such people.”

Caesar nodded as if he understood.

“Anyway, you’re saying 500 del, right?”

“Well… I’ll try to match 560 del.”

“Alright. I got it. You can go now.”

“You really need to sell quickly! If not now, it won’t be poss…”

Knock knock-

-It’s Harrison Walterwood. May I come in for a moment?

At the mention of Harrison, the man froze.

Caesar said with a smirk,

“Come in.”

The door opened and Harrison, leaning on a black cane, entered.

Harrison looked back and forth between Caesar and the man, then bowed his head to Caesar in greeting.

“I apologize for keeping you waiting for so long, Sir Caesar.”

“No, it’s fine.”

“By the way…”

Harrison looked at the man.

“Sheo. For what reason are you meeting with Sir Caesar?”

Sheo coughed and said,

“Yo-young master Harrison. How, how have you been?”

“So why are you meeting with Sir Caesar, I ask.”

Caesar tilted his head and said, “Was your name Sheo? The business card you gave me says Adam.”

“Ah, ah, that’s…”

Caesar swiftly grabbed Sheo’s neck and lifted him up.

“Gack! Gack!”

“You didn’t think you could lie to me and return safely, did you? Sheo?”

“So-sorry…”

Harrison stopped Caesar.

“Sir Caesar. Using force here is not a very good choice.”

“Why is that?”

“The Hilton Hotel is a safe hotel designated by the Mayor of Homigraph, where nobles and council members also come. If you use force here, you could receive aggravated punishment.”

“Is that so? I’ve been shot at in such a safe hotel too.”

Caesar grinned as he looked at Sheo, who was starting to foam at the mouth.

“Wouldn’t it be okay to twist his neck halfway?”

“Gack! Gack!”

Harrison calmly dissuaded Caesar.

“If you do the same thing as those scoundrels, it will lower Sir Caesar’s dignity. I think it’s best to stop here.”

“Then, in your opinion, how should we deal with this guy?”

“Simply concealing one’s identity is not a crime. However, considering that he tried to proceed with the transaction with impure intentions, we might be able to charge him with fraud.”

“Alright. You handle it.”

Caesar threw Sheo to the floor.

Looking at Sheo crawling on the floor and drooling, Caesar said, “You’d better pray that Harrison handles this properly. If he doesn’t screw you over perfectly to my satisfaction, I’ll challenge you to a duel. Then you’ll learn with that smart tongue of yours just how hot my axe is.”

As Caesar rang the bell, police officers from Smithmoor who were waiting outside approached.

“This guy tried to scam me. Can you lock him up for about 24 hours?”

The police officers looked at each other and nodded.

“Yes, that’s possible.”

“Tell Police Chief Serom I’m always grateful. Here’s for your trouble.”

Caesar handed each police officer a 100 del bill.

The police officers’ mouths split into wide grins as they dragged Sheo away.

After the police officers closed the door and left, Harrison sat down in front of Caesar.

“…Have you been meeting such scammers all this time?”

“I just called them to hear about how the world is going, and to receive their sincerity a bit.”

Caesar pointed to the gifts placed in the corner of the hotel room.

Harrison closed his eyes tightly.

“Receiving gifts from such scoundrels itself lowers Sir Caesar’s reputation. I think it would be best to return all of them.”

“Alright.”

When Caesar accepted so readily, Harrison looked at him as if surprised.

“Is it okay to return all of them?”

“I’ve already gotten what I needed from them.”

He had used psychometry on the gifts to extract all the information about what those guys were thinking when they came to meet Caesar.

Now those gifts are no different from garbage.

“So where are all your friends?”

“They’re on their way up after settling their affairs. You’ll be able to meet them soon.”

“Then I think you have something to report to me now?”

“The contract comes first, before that.”

Harrison took out a prepared contract from his pocket.

“This is an employment contract commonly used in Homigraph. I’ve added some special clauses that I want. First…”

“Wait, let me read it first.”

Caesar read the contract while using psychometry.

Then, the thoughts with which the guy had written this contract came to Caesar’s ears.

-I will definitely gain Father’s recognition.

-And I will absolutely get revenge on my brothers who screwed me over.

-For that, I absolutely need the gold Sir Caesar has.

-But he’s too hot-tempered, so I’m not sure if I can properly hold the reins.

-So I need to add some special clauses.

‘Look at this guy?’

The whole world seems to be trying to backstab poor Caesar.

He accepted him thinking he was an extremely capable NPC, but to think he had thoughts of sucking Caesar’s blood dry.

This is why games and reality are so different.

“In special clause 1, it says you have full trading authority over all assets I own. What’s this about?”

“Sir Caesar, you’ve never sold gold before, have you? This is added to shorten the time and handle it efficiently.”

“The content in special clause 3 that says you can view my assets whenever you want?”

“That’s also content that any butler managing Sir Caesar’s assets would naturally include.”

“Harrison.”

Harrison froze at Caesar’s voice that had suddenly turned cold.

“I’m sure I told you that my intuition has never been wrong. If you’re not stupid, you’ll remember?”

“…That’s right.”

“But now my intuition is ringing alarm bells? This contract is trash, so tear it up right now.”

Caesar ripped the contract with a tearing sound.

“Write it again and bring it back. If you don’t want to die.”

Harrison’s mind went blank as he watched the pieces of the contract falling limply.

***

Harrison headed to the hotel lounge with the torn contract.

The hoteliers handed Harrison an ashtray and some alcohol.

“This is a gift from the general manager.”

“Tell him I accept it gratefully.”

He was just craving some alcohol.

Harrison lit a cigar and fell into thought.

Nothing in this world goes as one wants.

Did he underestimate Caesar?

He was so shocked by the sight of Caesar tearing up the contract that he couldn’t even threaten that without him, all of Caesar’s gold would be confiscated.

What on earth is he relying on to try to survive in this Homigraph, which is like a den of these politicians and wealthy people?

‘It doesn’t seem like he simply wants to live leisurely in Homigraph.’

When he said before that he wanted to live with 20 maids, Harrison was actually a bit relieved.

He thought Caesar was a lustful, stupid nouveau riche who thought his wealth would spring up infinitely like a fountain.

But looking at it now, something seems strange.

‘What on earth is he aiming for?’

As Harrison took a sip of alcohol, a middle-aged man approached him.

“You’re Young Master Harrison, right? It’s an honor to meet you like this. I’m Ramsky Zickwood.”

Harrison accepted Ramsky’s handshake.

In fact, he didn’t want to talk to anyone, but this person was an exception.

“Nice to meet you. I heard you’ve been working hard assisting Sir Caesar.”

“It’s fine. By the way, may I sit down?”

“Please do. I actually had something to ask as well.”

Ramsky sat across from Harrison and put a cigar in his mouth.

“It seems things didn’t go well with Sir Caesar.”

Ramsky looked at Harrison’s contract.

Harrison nodded with an embarrassed expression.

“He’s an incomprehensible person.”

“I’ve been watching him for over three weeks, but he’s still someone I can’t quite figure out.”

“…Is that so?”

Although this was Harrison’s first time seeing Ramsky, he knew about him through hearsay.

A commoner by birth with an unremarkable family, but skilled in calculations and with a good eye for people, he had secured the position of Homigraph’s branch manager.

The story of him becoming a son-in-law of the Zickwood family to rise to the position of bank president was quite famous in this field.

For such a person to still not understand Caesar?

This was a bit strange.

“Actually, this is only the second time I’ve seen Sir Caesar, so I don’t know him well yet.”

“Is that so? I thought you two knew each other well. If you knew Sir Caesar’s temper… No, personality, you wouldn’t have offered to be the proxy for executing Sir Caesar’s funds.”

“…What kind of person is he?”

Ramsky exhaled cigarette smoke and opened his mouth.

“You must have heard about Sir Caesar being ambushed by the Kelvin Brothers.”

“I know. I heard the two brothers died on the spot.”

“That’s not it. Sir Caesar personally raided the Kelvin Brothers’ hideout, dragged the two brothers to the Hilton Hotel, and then threatened me.”

“…What? He threatened you?”

“He said it was quite curious that an assassin came less than 12 hours after depositing gold in Parker Bank. He said if I didn’t bring Deputy Security Chief Gordon, who had commissioned the assassination to the Kelvin Brothers, within an hour, he wouldn’t give any explanation to the reporters.”

Harrison tilted his head.

“Then couldn’t you just have paid off the reporters to write a different article?”

“From my position, there was no reason to do that at all, was there? Sir Caesar had already proven that Parker Bank had nothing to do with this incident. I just had to follow along.”

Harrison was amazed by Caesar’s remarkable social skills.

Even to Harrison, no other path seemed visible except for that move.

“After that, we discussed future matters with Gordon and the South Line Police Chief.”

“When you say you discussed…”

“It means we hid what needed to be hidden and exaggerated what needed to be exaggerated. That’s why you, Young Master Harrison, don’t know that Gordon came to the Hilton Hotel. Unless you were one of the people present, you wouldn’t know what happened.”

Harrison finally seemed to understand what mistake he had made.

He had underestimated Caesar, far too much.

He wasn’t just a stupid knight who was good at swinging an axe, but a schemer capable of engaging in political discussions.

“But why were the two leaders of the Kelvin Brothers treated as if they died on the spot? If they were just put on trial, wouldn’t the South Line Police Chief’s position be strengthened and Sir Caesar also benefit greatly?”

“He took up his axe and killed the two brothers right there.”

“What? Why?”

“He said he just wanted to kill them.”

Seeing Harrison’s blank expression, Ramsky laughed softly.

A feeling of sympathy, perhaps?

“Since then, I decided not to dare judge Sir Caesar. His behavior is no different from a mad dog, but he never crosses the line, and sometimes shows chilling judgment.”

Ramsky cut the remaining cigar.

“I feel like I’ve given presumptuous advice.”

“…Not at all.”

“I have urgent business, so I’ll be going now.”

Ramsky glanced at Harrison, who was lost in thought with a blank look, and muttered.

“You’re going to have a hard time from now on.”

Ramsky left the place as lightly as a slave who had found freedom.

***

Harrison headed to the rooftop.

Caesar was there, in the middle of training.

As soon as Harrison set foot on the rooftop, Caesar’s axe stopped.

“Did you think about it?”

“Yes.”

Caesar used psychometry on the employment contract Harrison handed over.

-The special clauses have been completely revised.

-All changed to allow asset viewing and management only with Sir Caesar’s permission.

-The employee management area was also modified to be possible only in the areas newly organized by Caesar.

-I abandon the idea of using Caesar. I should think of him as a partner.

“Hmm.”

Caesar looked at Harrison.

His eyes were straight, but his pulse was fast and rough.

It meant he was finding Caesar difficult to deal with.

“What do you aim to achieve through me, Harrison?”

Harrison tightly gripped the hand holding his cane.

“I want to get revenge on my two older brothers who drove me out of Homigraph.”

“And?”

“…That’s the start for now.”

Caesar signed the contract.

“Right. If you’ve been hit once, you should at least throw a counter punch as a man.”

Caesar handed the contract to Harrison.

“I’m counting on you, Harrison.”

Harrison’s cane fell to the floor.

Harrison bowed his head and received the contract respectfully with both hands.

“I will serve you wholeheartedly from now on, Sir Caesar.”
