I Became the Successor of the Martial God Chapter 72

I Became the Successor of the Martial God

Chapter 72.

After forming a defensive line, Yoo Baek-jun and Team 1 quickly moved toward Point C.

Whoosh!

—Y-you… human… cough!

He and the swordsmen slaughtered every demon they encountered.

Looking up, they could see demons still falling from the sky.

Yoo Baek-jun quickened his pace.

“Yoo Baek-jun! Why did you separate Team 1? Wouldn’t it be better to just hold the defensive line?”

Yoo Min, who had been following him, shouted.

While other teams were evacuating civilians or dealing with the demons, Team 1 kept moving toward an unknown destination.

‘What the hell is going on?’

Yoo Min was confused.

She couldn’t comprehend the current situation.

Gate forecasts weren’t perfect, and many gates couldn’t be detected in advance.

But,

‘How the hell did he know a Great invasion gate—one even the forecasts couldn’t predict—would appear?’

That was the question.

Moreover, the way multiple organizations were responding—it was clear they had prepared for this, fully expecting it to happen.

‘Is this guy… really the Yoo Baek-jun I know?’

The moment she thought that, Yoo Baek-jun suddenly turned his head. Yoo Min flinched.

“We have to do what we need to do.”

“What do we need to do?”

“Yeah.”

Yoo Baek-jun looked up at the sky.

Beyond the still-falling demons, he could see those deflecting the weapon fire.

Three Legion Commanders leading them.

One was missing.

“One of the leaders leading the demons has fallen. We’re going to kill him.”

“The leader…?”

Yoo Min also realized something.

The three monsters that had appeared first—their energy had been so overwhelming it could be felt from afar.

Yoo Baek-jun sprinted ahead.

After some time—

Kwaaaang! Kooong!

—Ugh! My wings… I can’t move them… Need time to recover… In the meantime, destruction…!

A deafening roar and a groan filled with pain echoed.

Yoo Baek-jun raised his head. At the end of the street, a massive monster was wreaking havoc.

A colossal demon, its entire body made of stone.

—You damned humans…! Die…!

Severius was roaring.

Severius’s might was overwhelming.

Every swing of his thick arms shattered buildings, and every step dug deep into the ground.

An overwhelming size, and—

Kaaang!

“Damn it!”

A near-invincible defense.

The warriors of the Peng Family were holding Severius back.

They attacked with dazzling sword techniques, but—

Every strike was blocked.

“It was one thing to ask if we could take care of it…”

Peng Do-hyeok smirked bitterly.

The Peng Family was famous for its destructive power—only those confident in their offensive skills gathered there.

Yet, their attacks weren’t working at all.

Their pride couldn’t help but be wounded.

—How dare you… touch my body…!

Severius flapped his wings.

The wind condensed, splitting into countless spheres. The spheres vibrated, then began bombarding the area like weapons.

Kwaaaang!

“Ugh!”

The indiscriminate bombardment continued.

The Peng Family abandoned offense and focused on defense—there were still civilians nearby who hadn’t evacuated.

“Are the evacuations still not complete?!”

“We need a little more time! There was an event happening around here, so…”

“An event? What kind of event in times like these? Tch!”

Peng Do-hyeok, leading the warriors, scanned the area.

“You, come with me to hold off that monster! The rest, prioritize rescuing civilians! Hold out until the Sword Saint’s family arrives!”

“Master Peng Do-hyeok, are you sure?!”

“If I can’t even do this, I don’t deserve to be called a warrior of the Peng Family! Go!”

Some warriors left.

Peng Do-hyeok remained with the others, glaring at Severius with a fierce grin.

“You demon! You look a bit different from the one I saw in the last gate…!”

Whoosh!

Flames erupted from his blade.

They couldn’t break through its defense. The only option was to unleash a relentless assault to buy time.

Until other guilds arrived.

“Huuup!”

—Koo… Ooooh!

Peng Do-hyeok and the warriors charged.

The battle intensified.

Peng So-young, while helping evacuate civilians with the other warriors, watched the scene.

‘I…’

Her body trembled.

It was a colossal monster—so powerful that the thought of fighting it didn’t even cross her mind.

‘How can anyone fight that?’

But Peng Do-hyeok was fighting.

The warriors, other guilds, hunters—everyone was fighting.

Unlike her.

A crushing sense of powerlessness weighed on her.

‘I…’

Peng So-young clenched her eyes shut.

Then, Severius attack struck right beside her.

Her body was flung backward.

“Ugh!”

“Young Lady!”

The warriors rushed to help her up and tended to her wounds.

The injuries weren’t severe.

“I-I’m fine. Help the others—”

“Young Lady, fall back behind us!”

“O-okay…”

Peng So-young hesitantly retreated.

She wanted to fight like Peng Do-hyeok, but it was impossible. She lacked the talent, the strength.

The only thing she could do was step back to avoid being a hindrance.

“Huh?”

As she retreated, an unbelievable sight caught her eye.

A familiar man sprinting from the distance.

As he spun and swung his sword—

Slice!

Moon Cleaver.

A circular sword beam tore through the thick barrier.

“Tear the barrier down first!”

Following his lead, other swordsmen’s Moon Slashes completely shredded the barrier.

Like Peng So-young, even Peng Do-hyeok, mid-battle, gaped in shock.

“It’s tearing.. like paper…?”

Peng Do-hyeok looked at the one who had unleashed the slash.

“Charge!”

“Y-yes!”

“Huh?!”

Yoo Baek-jun shouted loudly.

The Peng Family warriors instinctively obeyed and charged alongside him.

“Aim for the wings! Attack!”

“O-oh!”

Through the torn barrier, the swordsmen and warriors advanced.

Swordsmen on one wing, warriors on the other.

“Don’t hold back! Pour everything into it!”

Without a hint of doubt, the swordsmen and warriors followed his command.

They unleashed their strongest attacks on Severius wings.

“Attack on my signal!”

Yoo Baek-jun threw his sword and charged—straight toward Severius without hesitation.

“Now!”

In an instant, his weapon switched to a spear, and he unleashed nine furious thrusts.

Severius crossed his arms to block, but the nine strikes hammered down.

Crackle!

Lightning surged over his arms.

Unable to withstand the impact, Severius arms dropped.

The swordsmen and warriors seized the chance to strike its body directly.

—Guh… Uuugh!

Yoo Baek-jun raised his spear high. Energy gathered at the tip, summoning lightning.

—You… bastard…!

Kwaaang!

A bolt of lightning struck Severius from above. His body staggered, and Yoo Baek-jun tossed the spear into subspace.

Now was the time to press the advantage.

“Young Master! Now!”

Everyone thought the same.

Severius was heavily wounded—now was the time to finish it with a decisive blow.

But Yoo Baek-jun had a different plan.

“Fall back! Fall back thirty paces!”

“Huh?!”

“Now!”

Yoo Baek-jun immediately retreated.

Though bewildered, the swordsmen and warriors obeyed without question.

Kiiing!

“W-what is that?!”

The moment they retreated, Severius entire body began glowing—a sinister black light.

Energy gathered as if it were about to explode.

‘That bastard can absorb attacks.’

Severius was incredibly tough. He also had rapid regeneration, allowing him to recover quickly from damage.

And—

—You’re quick…! But it’s meaningless…!

“Everyone, gather!”

Severius stomped the ground with full force.

A violent wind erupted around it, soon twisting into a whirlwind that shredded everything in its path.

“Sword Barrier!”

Slice!

The swordsmen encircled the warriors, activating their barriers simultaneously. Yoo Baek-jun stepped forward and countered.

“Ugh…!”

“Guh!”

Groans escaped the swordsmen maintaining the barrier.

Cold sweat dripped down their backs.

Not only did he have overwhelming defense, but he could also absorb energy and counterattack.

If they had kept up their relentless assault earlier, they would have been annihilated by now.

“Y-Young Master! We can’t hold on much longer!”

“Just a little longer. It’s almost over.”

The barrier flickered as if about to break. Yoo Baek-jun’s hands, executing the counter, were a mess.

He counted the time in his head.

He had fought this enemy countless times. He knew exactly when this pattern would end.

“The moment this attack ends, we charge. Yoo Min, Han Seong—disable his arms so he can’t block.”

“…I’ll try.”

“Understood, Young Master.”

Yoo Baek-jun absorbed the energy from his counter and quickly assimilated it.

His hands were already torn to shreds by the wind blades.

‘How did a guy who used to just play games at home end up doing this crazy shit here?’

He smiled bitterly.

The moment the barrier at his fingertips shattered, and the swordsmen’s barriers finally collapsed—

Severius attack stopped.

“Now!”

Yoo Baek-jun kicked off the ground and charged.

Like any game, Severius had a groggy period between patterns—a window for damage.

A timing deliberately designed by the developers.

—Uuuugh…!

This was it.

Severius, having unleashed a massive area attack, was now adjusting its stance and assuming a defensive posture.

With his arms spread like shields—

“Strike!”

Yoo Baek-jun shouted.

Yoo Min dashed ahead, activating her unique ability. Countless swords shot forth, transforming into clones resembling her.

Swish!

The clones slashed Severius arms to pieces.

Then, Han Seong’s massive ghost sword wedged between them—

—Guh… Aaah!

“Young Master!”

A huge opening appeared.

“I know.”

Yoo Baek-jun rushed through the opening, instantly closing the distance to Severius.

What unfolded from his fingertips was the ‘Heavenly Chain Strikes’

—Cough… Aaah!

Magic power exploded around Yoo Baek-jun.

He stomped the ground, his figure blurring as multiple afterimages appeared.

The afterimages overlapped onto him—

Slice!

—and unleashed simultaneous strikes.

One afterimage delivered a straight punch, another a Heavy Strike, another a Gale kick.

Every skill Yoo Baek-jun possessed was executed at once through the afterimages.

—Ugh… Cough!

Severius armor shattered with each hit, peeling away.

The relentless assault left him breathless. His heart pounded wildly, blood rushing from accelerated circulation.

‘Enhance.’

Yoo Baek-jun activated the enhancement option on his gauntlets and smoothly chained into the next move.

Finally, there was only one move left.

“Huuup…!”

Heavenly Destruction.

The wind energy he had absorbed earlier condensed into his fist.

From his hand, a wind dragon shot forth, slashing at everything in its path.

—Grrr…!

The wind dragon struck Severius abdomen, shattering every piece of his armor.

Fragments rained down as Yoo Baek-jun shook off his bloody hand and drew his sword from his subspace.

“Charge!”

“Huuup!”

The swordsmen and warriors rushed in unison, assaulting Severius.

He could do nothing but desperately defend, unable to counterattack.

“Let’s end this.”

Yoo Baek-jun scaled its body in an instant, reaching its face.

—H-how… human… how…

Every demon had a specialty.

Severius was defense—barriers and armor that could block anything.

His only weakness was magic. Physical attacks could barely scratch him.

He was confident.

But,

“Gear advantage, buddy.”

Before the Saint King’s Aura, his barriers and armor were halved in effectiveness.

Yoo Baek-jun raised his sword high.

Stab!

The blade pierced his skull.

Thud.

Severius body stiffened. Then, slowly, the colossal figure toppled over.

The was the moment the 5th Legion Commander died.
