“You should escape alone at least. There’s no need for you to die needlessly too.”

Then Siegfried shook his head and said while looking at Claudia.

He grinned while finishing the rest of his jerky.

Claudia sighed looking at Siegfried, then contemplated something. After a moment, she took something out from her clothes.

A plain wooden cup.

It was the Holy Grail.

Siegfried looked at the Holy Grail and smiled saying,

“I thought it would be something amazing since they said it was a holy relic made by the Fairy King. It looks really shabby.”

The seven kingdoms started a war over this one wooden cup. It was because of rumors that the Holy Grail grants immortality.

Siegfried asked Claudia.

“But can this crude-looking cup really give immortal power?”

To that question, Claudia shook her head.

“The Holy Grail has the ability to draw out human potential. It shows completely different effects depending on what potential that human has. The problem is… you could die if you can’t properly handle its power.”

Hearing those words, Siegfried shook his head.

“Sheesh, but why are the kings so desperate to get this? Let alone immortality, they might die.”

At Siegfried’s words, Claudia’s gaze turned fierce.

“We need to escape from here right now.”

Claudia was shocked at Siegfried’s words.

“What are you saying! You want me to go alone?”

“Would you rather we both die side by side?”

Looking at Siegfried spinning his sword, Claudia bit her lip hard.

She said to Siegfried.

“Why are you going this far? You said you’d collect on the life debt, but throwing away your life doesn’t make sense!”

At her cry, Siegfried looked at Claudia and said.

“You said it yourself. Humans ruin everything because of greed.”

Siegfried looked at her with serious eyes.

“I’m just another human who can’t help it.”

“What does that mean?”

Claudia looked at Siegfried as if she couldn’t understand.

He grinned at Claudia. Then he rushed out of the cave with his sword.

He raised his Aura Blade and swung his sword toward the presences hiding in front of the cave.

“KUHEOK!”

Siegfried’s Aura Blade cut right through thick armor and magic weapons.

When Siegfried appeared, the hidden knights revealed themselves.

A knight from Thebea, the newest of the seven kingdoms, stepped forward and shouted at Siegfried.

“Criminal Siegfried Draker who stole the holy relic, hear this! Hand over the holy relic immediately and end yourself honorably! Then your house, the Drakers, may survive!”

Siegfried smirked at those words.

“Haven’t heard that in a while. Draker, huh? Guess you haven’t heard how those bastards beat me to a bloody pulp when I was young and threw me in the corpse incinerator?”

The Thebean knight who had called for his suicide looked bewildered at Siegfried’s crude words.

That’s when Siegfried took off his gloves.

PAJIJIIJK!

When Siegfried removed his gloves, sparks flew from the knights’ armor and swords around him.

“Wh-what is this!”

The knights panicked as their enchanted equipment showed strange reactions.

Siegfried didn’t miss this opening.

“Come on, you bastards!”

Dozens of dead knights lay fallen around where Siegfried stood.

“HUU!”

But Siegfried wasn’t unscathed either, with countless arrows stuck in his back.

He pulled out a spear lodged in his side.

Blood dripped down.

Staggering, Siegfried walked toward the last knight still standing.

Sensing madness from Siegfried, the knight trembled.

Their bodies tangled as they fell onto the pile of corpses.

Siegfried grabbed whatever weapon he could and stabbed the knight’s neck.

Soon that knight too stopped breathing like the others sprawled around.

“Damn…”

Siegfried lay on the pile of corpses, panting.

Though he had the nickname ‘Immortal’, even he would die after being cut and stabbed this much.

With trembling hands, Siegfried took out a tobacco leaf from his clothes.

He tried to put it in his mouth, but his lips had no strength left and he dropped it in a pool of blood.

“Damn it… the fortune teller said I’d die because of a woman, and this is how it ends up.”

Siegfried recalled when he first met Claudia Lubern.

Like a noble lady who had just stepped out into the world, she was ignorant yet stubborn and willful.

At first, he traveled with her across the continent simply because she was a skilled mage he had saved, but as time passed, he felt his heart changing.

“…I must be crazy. Really.”

Siegfried’s eyes began to slowly close.

That’s when someone approached him.

“…There was… one still alive.”

Siegfried tried hard to move his body.

He needed to kill even one more so the pursuers wouldn’t go after her and she could safely reach the Ice Mountains.

But what entered Siegfried’s sight was none other than Claudia herself.

“Why. Are you. Here?. Go, hurry…”

Claudia looked down at Siegfried with a face about to cry.

She knelt and gripped Siegfried’s clothes tightly.

Then she looked at him with reproachful eyes.

“Humans are… hateful, frivolous, selfish creatures. I really hate them. But Sigfried, why you…”

“That’s… similar to me. I don’t really… like humans either.”

Siegfried slowly raised his hand to try to pat Claudia’s head.

But his strengthless hand dropped limply to the ground.

Claudia hurriedly took out the Holy Grail from her clothes.

She infused power into the Grail.

WOOOONG!

The Grail emitted bright light and soon began filling with water.

Claudia quickly put the Grail to Siegfried’s lips.

“Sigfried! Quickly, drink this quickly!”

But Sigfried couldn’t swallow it. He had no strength left anywhere in his body.

Claudia took the Grail’s water in her mouth and directly transferred it to Sigfried’s mouth.

With Claudia’s help, Siegfried swallowed all the water contained in the Grail. That’s when it happened.

And shouted toward Siegfried.

Siegfried’s breath was almost gone.

In that moment, Claudia’s pupils changed.

The eyes of a great being shining with golden light were revealed.

She spoke to Siegfried.

「My name is Bahamut, Ruler of Sunset.」
