Chapter 16: Things Tenma Didn’t Know
After hearing Tenma’s words, the three people fell silent with shocked expressions. For Tenma, it was a heavy silence.
‘Did I ask something strange that I should have known?’ As he was feeling anxious, Alf broke the silence and said,
“Ahhh. Tenma, you’re not from around here so that’s why. Beyond the thicket you came out from, there’s the Magical Forest. There’s a place called the Never Return Prairie. The Never Return Prairie got its name because 40-50 years ago, a subjugation army went in there and never came back, so it’s called the Never Return Prairie. The Magical Forest is said to be beyond that, and it’s rumored to cause a Monster Stampede once every 200 years. The subjugation army is also said to be a victim of the Monster Stampede. But according to what I heard from an old man who’s lived in Gomena since then, Gomena apparently didn’t suffer any damage. If the monsters were eradicated, survivors from the subjugation army should have returned, and if the monsters had won, Gomena shouldn’t have been safe. For reasons unknown, the country has designated it as a ‘Forbidden Land’ and restricted entry. So normally, no one would think of entering that thicket. People enter from the opposite side. You came out from such a place. It would be strange not to be suspicious, wouldn’t it? Got it?”
Tenma understood after hearing Alf’s explanation.
Tenma thought that if someone had come out with such an infamous place on their back, he would be suspicious too. He felt that Alf had made the right judgment. More than that, he was surprised that the place he was summoned to was such a place, and he understood the reason for the corpse being there and its wounds.
“I didn’t know that. I don’t know what to say, but for now, I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing, Tenma? Anyway, let’s get going. I want to reach Gomena before sunset. Camping outside the city walls is miserable.”
Hearing Alf’s words, Leaf and Mario went around to the back of the carriage. Alf placed his great sword on the driver’s platform and took his seat. Tenma also climbed onto the driver’s platform, holding his sword.
“Everyone’s on board. Well then, let’s go.”
Alf checked on everyone and cracked the whip. Slowly, the carriage began to move, heading toward Gomena.
