There’s a Monster Inside me
Chapter 28
The unbelievable voice rang in Eun-deok’s ears, and an unbelievable sight appeared before her eyes.
Instead of the usual yellow-brown peasant attire, a dignified boy in blue clothes with a red hat stood tall on a wide rock.
“Baek Eun-ok, I entrust the princess to you.”
Despite facing a dangerous enemy, Bada Maru’s voice was calm. No trembling, no tension, no excessive excitement.
That familiar voice, unchanged from usual, made Eun-deok’s heart swell.
“Maru…”
Soon after, a soft and gentle touch enveloped her back. Someone lifted her up as half her body had been submerged in water.
Her broken shoulder throbbed with pain. Eun-deok gritted her teeth to avoid making a sound of pain.
“You are…”
The young immortal she had seen before through the crevice was now before her eyes.
RUMBLE!
BOOM!
A sound that shook the earth struck her eardrums. The yaksha’s iron club tore through the ground.
“Benefactor Maru!”
Princess Eun-deok turned her head, but white silk blocked her view. Baek Eun-ok had blocked her sight with his wide sleeve.
“You must not look.”
Baek Eun-ok’s voice was stern.
“It is forbidden.”
“But Benefactor Maru is…”
“Seeing nothing and hearing nothing is the way to help him.”
Baek Eun-ok’s voice was like a solemn warning.
Eun-deok’s pupils trembled slightly. When they met Baek Eun-ok’s obsidian-like gaze, somehow she felt she could understand.
In the crevice, Eun-deok had almost become food for a terrible demon. When she lost consciousness and woke up, only the limbs of the demon remained.
She had asked how such stone-hard monsters could end up like that, but Bada Maru had merely brushed it off.
It was from that time that she began to sense an inexplicable energy from the small boy.
“…I understand.”
Eun-deok closed her eyes.
She gathered the divine power within her body and sealed her own ears.
Now she could neither hear nor see. Eun-deok realized this was the only thing she could do for her benefactor right now.
***
GURGLE!
His stomach churned.
CRASH!
As the massive iron club drove down toward the crown of his head, the food spirit demon sprang out.
THUMP!
Watching the food spirit demon leap up from the ground, I turned toward the sorcerer.
Looking at the furry demon smaller than his palm, the yaksha revealed his crooked teeth in mockery.
“Shut up, you runt! What an ugly thing…”
The food spirit demon opened its mouth wide toward the monster from hell. It attached itself to the yaksha’s diamond-like shoulder and took a bite.
CHOMP!
“ARGH, You bastard!”
A thunderous roar echoed, and the yaksha struck his own shoulder with the iron club.
THUMP!
The food spirit demon that had been attached to the shoulder was already floating in the air.
CRASH!
“ARGHHHH!”
The flesh that fell off from the yaksha’s own swing of the iron club seemed more than what the food spirit demon had bitten off.
“Oh my!”
I clicked my tongue in sympathy.
It was obvious. This was clearly the lowest rank among the hell gatekeepers.
“HEHE, How stupid!”
“You bastaaaard!”
The yaksha’s iron club fell again toward the food spirit demon that was flicking its tongue.
THUD! CRASH! THUD!
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!.
The food spirit demon dodged with agility. Moreover, the yaksha seemed to be getting more and more heated.
How unfortunate.
I shook my head.
Though his strength and destructive power were impressive, his reaction speed was much slower than the silver wolf. How could he even touch the tip of the food spirit demon’s fur at this rate?
The yaksha would never imagine it.
That the furry creature before him was one that had devoured not only the hell’s elders and bishops he was guarding, but even the Twelve Apostles of Hell!
And that’s not all! This creature is a crazy being that even chewed up the Ten Great Kings of Hell who stood at the pinnacle of the underworld!
“You! A youngster from the Thousand-Year School dares to interfere with me?!”
The sorcerer who had summoned the yaksha shouted in an angry voice.
Meanwhile, the sorcerer had restored the broken barrier and completely isolated the inner space from the outside.
It was a perfect barrier technique that would go completely unnoticed even if divine power users from the Thousand-Year School came.
I had deliberately not touched the sorcerer until now. If he thinks a secretive barrier that no one can detect is only advantageous to him, he’s mistaken.
I’m also in a situation where it would be troublesome if I were discovered.
Black smoke curled out from the ten fingers of the sorcerer who had finished the barrier.
I easily avoided the black smoke that approached as if to grab my wrist. Perhaps because of the overflowing divine power, the sorcerer’s attack felt extremely sluggish.
I didn’t even need to be the eyes for the food spirit demon. Not just eyes, but ears and nose too, all senses were wide open.
Thanks to this, I could act freely on my own, and the food spirit demon could also do as it pleased.
Certainly, facing the wolf demon last night had been a great help. Apart from what I learned and trained at the school, actual combat improved my skills in a short time.
CRUNCH!
The food spirit demon finally bit off the top of the yaksha’s head.
âMUNCH MUNCH, GULP!â.
Judging by the loud swallowing, it seemed the taste wasn’t bad despite its appearance.
That makes sense.
Even though it looks like that, the yaksha is a gatekeeper of hell. With a divine rank far superior to minor demon, it should taste good.
The fact that a mere earthly sorcerer would summon such a creature without fear was the cause of the loosening boundary between this world and the netherworld, increasing the chaos.
“You insolent brat!”
The sorcerer seemed increasingly frustrated as I dodged every black smoke he sent.
The sorcerer gathered black energy to create a whirlwind.
Pitch-black energy poured toward my face. It contained no small amount of malice.
If one accidentally touched such a thing, it wouldn’t be strange to be cursed to sudden death.
“EEK!”
I turned my body sharply to deflect the energy.
As I spun around, the whirlwind packed with malice quickly changed direction and rushed toward me.
I jumped up high, striking the ground to avoid the whirlwind.
THUMP.
The food spirit demon that had been dealing with the yaksha approached right in front of me.
I instantly climbed onto its back.
“To think a nobody from the Thousand-Year School would raise such a strange demon! Since when has that place become so corrupt?”
My brows furrowed tightly at the sorcerer’s words.
“Corruption? Corruption is not the Thousand-Year School but your act of summoning monsters from hell!”
“Shall I eat him?”
The food spirit demon opened its mouth toward the sorcerer.
GASP!
Knowing the food spirit demon would bite him, the sorcerer’s expression contorted.
This demon had been nibbling on a yaksha as big as a mountain. It was obvious a human would be less than a mouthful.
“Food spirit demon, keep your promise!”
I shouted urgently.
“You, I told you not to eat humans!”
“HUH, thatâs still in effect?”
When it asked if that was âstill in effect,âit was because this promise was from our previous life.
From the previous life to this life… Yes, of course it still stands.
In my previous life, it made a firm covenant with me to never eat humans.
In the era when I couldn’t control it and it manipulated my limbs, the food spirit demon controlled my body and literally ate everything in sight.
It didn’t matter whether it was a beast, demon, monster, or ghost. Humans were no exception.
Imagine yourself tearing apart humans before your very eyes! How could anyone endure that? No amount of consolation that the torn flesh and blood went into the demon’s stomach provided any comfort.
That was why I fought with all my might to regain control of my body, and it was Grandmaster Cheonhajijong who awakened me then.
There were blood-and-tears trials to overcome that situation.
I wanted to give up countless times. Despite all my efforts, I felt such despair at being unable to reclaim my body that I wanted to lose my mind.
But I finally stood up again. I didn’t give up.
I stubbornly built up the divine power inside my body, clinging to thin hope. I struggled to regain control of my body.
It wasn’t a fight with the food spirit demon. It was a fight with myself.
When I won that long battle, I extracted a solemn promise from it:
Never to eat humans.
That was like minimal proof that I, carrying a demon, was still human.
“Then do as you wish.”
THUMP.
The food spirit demon detached from me and rushed back to the yaksha.
CHOMP!
The yaksha’s other shoulder fell off.
“ARGHHHH!â
Both shoulders of the yaksha were now tattered. The gatekeeper of hell no longer had the strength to wield the heavy iron club.
THUD!
The massive weapon it dropped crashed to the ground.
“URGH!”
The damage received by the yaksha directly transferred to the sorcerer.
The sorcerer wearing a pitch-black hood finally fell to one knee. Red blood flowed between his teeth.
The yaksha flailed its tattered arms frantically but couldn’t touch the food spirit demon.
At this point he should give up, but the sorcerer rolled his eyes fiercely.
âCHOMP. CRUNCH!â…
Finally, the yaksha, bitten all over its body, collapsed.
CHOMP!
As the demon bit off the yaksha’s large ear, the yaksha’s body was engulfed in crimson flames.
The yaksha, reduced to ashes, disappeared instantly like smoke. It had returned to hell, its original space.
The sorcerer flinched but quickly regained his senses. Seeing him still rolling his black eyeballs around, trying to escape the moment, anger surged within me.
“How dare you meddle with the underworld?! Do you even know that because of people like you, this world, The entire world, Is headed for destruction?!”
I grabbed the sorcerer by the collar and shook him violently.
COUGH!
Bright red blood spurted from his mouth.
He had received the exact same injuries that the yaksha suffered from the food spirit demon.
Clearly, to control the netherworld god, the sorcerer had offered his own body as sacrifice.
The problem was that the sorcerer’s body alone wasn’t enough to move the yaksha.
The monsters of hell are never satisfied with just one human, so they would obviously turn the living world into a wasteland and feed on all living things.
In my previous life, as creatures like that crossed over one by one, the world transformed into hell.
“HEHEHE…”
Even with blood dripping from his mouth, the sorcerer was still smiling.
An expression without the slightest hint of remorse…
A less-than-human who cared nothing for the world or other people.
I know these types well. Always craving greater power until they inevitably meddle with things they shouldn’t.
Power drunk fools.
Greedy lunatics.
“Brat, it’s not over yet.”
The sorcerer raised both arms.
RUMBLE…!
Another tremor could be felt from where the yaksha had disappeared.
It seemed the dull-witted sorcerer still hadn’t come to his senses and was summoning something else.
Something bigger and more massive than the yaksha…
It was pathetic how the sorcerer lifted his lips in a sinister smile.
“Both you and your spirit will become mine!”
“HUH, what’s this guy saying? I’ll become his? Says who? Has he completely lost his mind?”
Even the spirit stuck out its tongue in disbelief.
It seems in the sorcerer’s eyes, it appeared I was controlling the spirit.
He apparently thought if he killed me, he could possess the spirit, but what a ridiculous misunderstanding.
Did he really think he could pry this thing away from me?
Even if he did, did he truly believe he could command it?
“KUHEHE… No matter how powerful your spirit is, it’s useless! You’ve limited it from killing humans…!”
“Yes, that’s right.”
I responded simply.
“Afraid to take human lives. You’re just a brat who doesn’t know the bitterness of the world yet. HAHAHA…”
The sorcerer twisted his lips into a smile.
Ah, now I understood why the sorcerer maintained his composure even in this situation.
He believed that no matter how strong the spirit was, since it couldn’t kill humans, he had nothing to fear.
So that’s why he acted so fearlessly.
Behind him, black ashes rose like white powder. The black dust solidified and gradually formed a shape. A massive form large enough to cover the entire cliff.
It was another monster summoned by the sorcerer.
“How foolish.”
I rummaged through my pocket and pulled out a thin needle.
“The one who doesn’t kill humans is the spirit, not me.”
I threw the spiritual power-infused needle straight at the sorcerer’s forehead. There was no hesitation or delay.
There was no sorrow or solemnity that a young boy might show.
The needle’s tip quivered and created a spinning whirlwind. It pierced straight through the sorcerer’s forehead.
A black hole opened between his eyebrows, and a stream of blood gushed out.
