The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 91

The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 91

There was no time to hesitate once the decision to save Arandal was made.

The supplies brought by the Beckavia army would last at most a day and a half.

Moreover, the time Arandal could withstand the enemy’s siege was not long.

“Although Arandal is a fortress city, it’s not specialized for siege warfare. According to reports, our forces guarding the Bian Mountain have retreated into Arandal, which may buy us more time, but even so, it won’t last more than 3 days.”This was Sophia’s briefing. She looked at me once and continued her explanation with a sorrowful expression. “There are three key areas we need to recapture: the Bian Mountain, the Delston Mountain, and the Coquin Mountain flowing through the Rest Mountain Range. If we recapture all three of these mountain areas, the enemy will no longer have the strength to surround Arandal and will retreat.”

The Rest Mountain Range was a thin and long mountain range that vertically cut through western Arandal.

The characteristic of this mountain range was that it had many well-developed mountain paths.

As merchant groups heading to Arandal continuously developed these paths, there were many large roads wide enough for a single wagon to pass through.

“I think we can attack quite easily using those roads, but the enemy will also be prepared for that, so please be careful.”

The enemy forces revealed by intelligence were three.

Tunkai’s 30,000 troops guarding the Bian Mountain. Tunkai’s 20,000 and the West’s 20,000 guarding the Coquin Mountain. And the West’s 16,000 troops guarding the Delston Mountain.

“Our Beckavia 2nd Army stationed in the Endagel Plains has agreed to take care of the Coquin Mountain. And Austin and I will handle the Bian Mountain. So, I’d like General Delbadova to take charge of recapturing the remaining Delston Mountain.”

“That seems like an appropriate arrangement. Understood.”

“We don’t have much time… Please move immediately.”

Sophia left the military council chamber as if fleeing.

Vali Austin also deeply bowed to General Delbadova and followed Sophia.

General Delbadova let out a small sigh.

“Don’t worry about them. We just need to do our best with what we can.”

At this point, Denian Geglish cautiously raised his hand.”General, it’s an impertinent question, but does this mean Elaine’s military achievements will disappear? After all, his plan has failed.”

“What are you saying in this situation…?” General Delbadova clicked his tongue as if it was pathetic but reluctantly said, “That’s how it will end up. There will be no military achievements. However, his contribution to the army will still be evaluated.”

When he gave a definitive answer, the expressions of Denian and his group brightened a bit. It’s as if they regained their motivation.

‘Well, they’re consistent fellows.’

Still, it wasn’t bad that they recovered their morale in a situation where they soon had to face a tough battle. The same goes for military achievements. As I was in a position where I didn’t want achievements, it was like blowing my nose without using my hands since that guy got the answer for me instead.

General Delbadova shook his head and unfolded the map of the Delston Mountain received from the Beckavia army.

“The enemy we’ll be facing will likely be the Western army we fought last time. They’ve bypassed the battlefield, occupied the Delston Mountain, and are blocking the path to Arandal. If anyone has an effective way to defeat the opponent, speak up.”

At this, everyone’s gaze turned to me.

I shook my head. “There’s no suitable method. Given that we don’t have much time left, we have no choice but to engage in a battle of strength and push them back. We’ll have to make tactical decisions based on the constantly changing situation once we enter the battle.”

“I see…”

At that moment, Casper, who had been staring intently at a point on the map, spoke while trying to hide his excitement.

“How about using this hill here?”

“Hill?”

“I mean the highland located in the northwest part of the terrain. If we can send the archers up to that position, we should be able to provide wide-range support fire. We can dominate the battlefield!”

“Hmm. What do the other officers think?”

As Casper said, if we can just send them up there, it would be a good strategy. The power of the arrows might decrease due to the mountainous terrain, but it’s still helpful.

Above all, it has great tactical significance.

If we can harass them with arrows, we can also take tactical initiative in other parts of the battlefield through that harassment.

Moreover, the northwest highland is a place with a wide-open view, so it’s good for observing the entire battlefield.

“Elaine, what do you think?”

“It’s not bad from the perspective of trying something.”

“It seems the other officers think the same. Then we’ll proceed in that direction.”

After finishing the discussion about troop deployment, the military council meeting ended.

The officers returned to their units early to prepare for the march at dawn tomorrow.

After they left, I returned alone and had a private meeting with Delbadova.

“What business do you have?”

“There’s one thing I’d like to mention about tomorrow’s operation.”

After hearing the content, Delbadova’s eyes widened, and then he nodded heavily.

* * *

The situation had caught fire.

This news was also reaching the military of Crossing, who were facing off against Western armies.

“A suddenly appearing cavalry of Tunkai has broken through the Bian mountains! As a result, Arandal has been surrounded, and the armies of Tunkai and the West have set up camp around it!”

The military council chamber was buzzing.

Juras’ face showed annoyance upon receiving this report.

“This is why I said not to participate in the war.”

Having immediately grasped Ars’ intentions through the report, Juras already considered this war over. All he had to do was provide assistance in line with that movement.

The reason for Juras’s annoyance was that he could no longer use the tactics he had intended to employ.

One might say that winning is always good, but the process is different.

Juras had planned to completely rout the Western expeditionary forces. To do so thoroughly enough that they would never dream of launching another expedition to the north.

In contrast, the method Ars chose was to win the war by cutting off the enemy’s supplies and inducing their retreat, without inflicting casualties on the enemy forces.

This was also Ars’ theory of warfare.

It was like playing chess. Just as one makes the best moves to capture the king, he finds the most efficient route to victory.

This was what Juras saw as both Ars’ strength and weakness.

“The best move isn’t always the best for everyone… I look forward to seeing when he’ll realize that.” Juras ordered without hesitation.”Anton, cancel the operation we were preparing. It seems your lord has done something unnecessary.”

At those disgruntled words, Anton snickered with satisfaction. “Haha, understood. I’ll inform the officers accordingly.”

With this, this war too will end in a boring victory.

Juras let out a regretful sigh, but his eyes widened at the subsequent report.

“Report! The Beckavia and Calliper armies have begun operations to recapture Arandal! They are said to be marching towards the Bian, Delston, and Coquin mountains!”

At this report, Juras burst into laughter.

“Hahaha! How amusing! Truly amusing!”

From that report alone, he deduced that the Beckavia side had opposed the operation.

“Well, this will be tough for you, Ars.”

Now it was Anton’s turn to become restless.

Juras said, lifting the corner of his mouth: “Come to think of it, didn’t you say he went to the battlefield alone this time? He might lose his life in vain if he’s not careful. If that happens, wouldn’t it be your wife’s fault? Isn’t this a big problem? At this rate, even I might not get to see the face of my cute nephew.”

“Juras…! Watch your words…!”

“Heh, let me tell you in advance, Anton, you cannot move. Given this situation, we too must tighten the reins of our operation.”

“Ugh!” Anton gritted his teeth.

Unable to move to help Ars, he decided to urgently use a carrier pigeon to send news to Reinpol.

Anton’s carrier pigeon headed for Ilya’s mansion.

Checking the note tied to the pigeon’s leg, Ilya couldn’t control her emotions and covered her face, sobbing. It was a sight that would have surprised anyone who only knew her usual stern demeanor.

‘Did I really make the right choice?’

Rationally, she knew it was right, but inside she wondered if she had done something crazy.

Unable to bear the swelling anxiety, Ilya finally headed to where Rutger was.

After hearing the story, Rutger patted her shoulder. “Raise your head. You did the right thing.”

Rutger fully understood Ilya’s feelings. He had done something similar to Estelle.

He had sent Estelle to the academy even though she was still ill and looked unsightly. He thought it was the right path.

Of course, there was anxiety. There were risks.

In fact, if Ars hadn’t taken care of Estelle, who knows what might have happened.

But in the end, Estelle grew through that experience. She became confident in dealing with people and more self-directed. If she hadn’t been sent to the academy then, she probably wouldn’t have changed as she has now.

“Trust him. He’ll return triumphantly. As his teacher, you should happily await your disciple’s victorious return.”

“…Thank you. My heart feels much lighter now.”

“More importantly, you should take better care of yourself. Didn’t you say your due date is approaching? Give me that note. I’ll inform the others.”

After Ilya left, Rutger tapped his desk with his fingers, deep in thought.

Having made a decision, he got up and headed to Ars’ mansion to find Yumir.

Since Ars’ departure, Yumir had been exuding a fierce atmosphere.

Even Rutger took a sharp breath at the unrefined, ominous energy that flowed.

“…What brings you here?”

“I have something I want to tell you. By the way, where is Eonia Mirabel? Wasn’t she staying with you?”

“She’s been with Bisketa Kren for a few days now.”

“Hmm, well. Looking at your current state, I can understand why one might want to run away. It’s suffocating.”

“If you have no business here, please leave.”

“I do have business. Business you’ve been desperately waiting for. Information about Ars has come in.”

“…!”

“Take a look at this.”

He showed Yumir the contents of the note and said, “Judging from the war situation, there’s a high possibility of a power struggle. It won’t be an easy battle. So you should go quickly. I’m skeptical about whether the timing will work out, but it’s better than not going at all.”

“…! I’ll leave right away.”

“I thought you’d say that. I’ve had a good horse prepared in the stable. If you ride that, you’ll be faster.”

Yumir disappeared like the wind.

“I suppose this is all the countermeasures I can take.”

Rutger himself didn’t want Ars to die either. He couldn’t even imagine how heartbroken Estelle would be if that happened.

‘I’m sorry for Ilya Anfei, but…’

He decided to take out the minimum insurance he could.

After sending Yumir to the Delston mountains, Rutger headed to Olaf’s office to inform him of this matter as well, but no one was there.

“What’s this…?”

An empty office.

Olaf, who should have been taking care of internal affairs, had suddenly vanished.

  1. Jay Crowler says:

Juras saying Ars needs to learn that the best move isn’t the best for everyone is ironic when he himself actively chooses plans that are never the best for everyone else.
