The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 59 Part 1

The Extra Strategist’s Royal Road Chapter 59 – Part 1

The atmosphere in the commander-in-chief’s tent was heavy.

Screams could still be heard from outside.

The enemy seemed to be torturing and killing meticulously, as if trying to draw out the suffering.

“Those bastards, I’ll tear them apart…!”

One of Dunan’s adjutants gritted his teeth.

Dunan, who had been sitting with his eyes closed as if meditating, opened his eyes and spoke.

“It seems everyone has arrived. Then let’s start the meeting right away.”

However, one adjutant spoke up, not understanding.

“General. Why have you called these kids here?”

He was referring to Ruan Chase and Casper Millias, who represented the cadets, and me.

Dunan answered. “These are the representatives of the cadets. They have the right to know how the war situation is unfolding.”

“That may be so. But that one over there, I have no idea who he is…”

While the officers knew the faces of Ruan and Casper since they were famous, it seemed I was unfamiliar. He was raising an objection to my attendance.

“He’s one of the cadets with particularly excellent grades. Don’t quibble over minor details and let’s talk about how to deal with the current war situation!”

The officers vaguely assumed I was a cadet from the Hellian faction. Since Ruan and Casper were from the Saleon faction, they seemed to understand that I was just brought in as a high-achieving student to balance things out.

And so the military meeting began, including even the cadets.

“There’s only one thing we must do!”

An officer who seemed to be from the non-combat officer stepped forward and proposed a strategy.

“As soon as the sun rises, we must immediately march out to destroy that tower!”

He said this would weaken the mental attack and raise the morale of the soldiers.

I was planning to keep my mouth shut, but I couldn’t help speaking up at this stupid plan.

“That’s exactly what the enemy wants us to do.”

“…”

The non-combat officer shot me a laser-like glare, as if telling me not to interfere as a mere child.

Dunan stopped that officer and asked me. “Tell us your thoughts, Ars Elaine.”

“General Dunan. Before that, may I ask one thing, have you identified the location of the enemy’s main camp?”

“…”

“I see, so you haven’t identified the enemy’s main camp location. That’s why that officer suggested attacking the pointless tower instead of the enemy’s main camp. If we can’t strike the enemy’s main camp, there’s no meaning in launching an attack. Rather, we’ll likely suffer heavy losses from a prepared ambush.”

“Then what are you suggesting we do!”

The non-combat  officer lashed out at me.

“If you’re going to talk, at least offer an alternative!”

“There’s no need for alternatives or anything else. The enemy is harming themselves. Executing prisoners? Let them do as they please. We just need to hold our position and reap the benefits. If there’s any measure to take, it would be distributing earplugs to the soldiers.”

“That…!”

At my opinion, Dunan muttered in a faint voice.

“Boldly discard what needs to be discarded, and take what can be taken… Just as Juras Pamilion said.”

He paused for a moment before speaking.

“That cadet’s opinion is correct in terms of military tactics. But being correct doesn’t mean it’s the best option. There must be a better way than leaving the situation as it is.”

To this, Casper spoke up. “If I may… Say one thing?”

“Go ahead, Casper Millias.”

“I think it would be better for the cadets… To withdraw from this battlefield.”

At this, commotion broke out here and there.

“Nonsense! You’re soldiers too! Are you trying to run away from the battlefield because you’re scared?”

“Withdraw from the battlefield? Who do you think you are! If you really want to leave the battlefield, resign right now! We won’t stop you from doing that!”

Casper swallowed hard at the sharp reactions he hadn’t felt in a long time.

Usually, he would be treated as Wade and receive respectful treatment even from superiors.

Due to the impersonation ordered by Gilbert Saleon, and even Duke Hellian secretly conducting counter-operations to hide my identity, quite a few soldiers and officers thought Casper was Wade.

Duke Hellian had moved cunningly.

The reason for the counter-operation was partly to hide my identity, and partly to impose risks on the Saleon faction.

The more Casper’s Wade impersonation spread, the greater the impact would be when it was revealed to be fake.

‘Even so, it seems the higher-ranking officers aren’t that foolish.’

Casper realized that the officers here didn’t think he was Wade, and nervously licked his lips.

“That, that is…”

I decided to provide supporting fire.

“He’s right. It would be better to withdraw the cadets from the battlefield. If not all of them, at least one should be withdrawn.”

“And who is this one?”

“Dorofei Grimwood. It would be wise to withdraw the general’s son from the battlefield. If Dorofei were to become a prisoner, would you be able to maintain your composure, General?”

“…!”

At this, the other officers also fell silent.

Then, he’s reevaluating Casper, wondering if that was the meaning behind his opinion.

“Dorofei… Does not leave the battlefield. I cannot make such an exception just because he’s my son.”

“That’s why I’m suggesting we evacuate all the cadets. Then there’s no exception or anything.”

“No, the cadets are soldiers of our unit too. We may die together, but we cannot desert to preserve our lives. Motion denied.”

“…”

“And there must be other ways to break this situation besides just staying put.”

“And what would that method be…?”

“To find the enemy’s main camp and strike it.”

“It won’t be easy. We can’t even be sure if the enemy’s main camp that our intelligence has found is really their main camp. There’s a very high chance it’s bait to lure us in.”

“Don’t underestimate our Calliper’s intelligence unit, Ars Elaine. It’s several times better than Crossing’s.”

“For something so good, it seems they failed to identify Tunkai’s commander first, which led to King Parain appearing in person at the military council meeting. Or am I misremembering?”

Dunan and I’s battle of wills brought a moment of silence to the tent, but it was only for a moment.

“How insolent! A mere cadet daring to speak to the General like that…!”

“It’s alright. That’s why I called him here. Anyway, the direction is decided. We will focus on defense until the intelligence unit discovers the enemy’s main camp. With this, I conclude the military council meeting. You’re dismissed.”

The military council meeting concluded with the decision to find the enemy’s main camp and then counterattack.

If we could really find the enemy’s main camp and strike it, it could be a good move, so I decided to watch the situation for the time being.

* * *

The enemy’s provocations intensify day by day.

I could feel that the military’s patience was reaching its limit.

‘Orders to keep preparing military equipment keep coming….’

While military equipment should always be maintained, preparing for the calm before the storm is different.

The level of tension flowing is on a different dimension, you could say.

The soldiers seemed to sense this atmosphere too, as unlike usual, they were carefully examining each weapon and attaching items given by family or lovers to their equipment.

“Ars. Have you heard anything?” Brother Ferge asked me, but I didn’t know anything either.

“I only know what I heard at that military council meeting. However…”

“However?”

“Judging by the atmosphere, it’s clear they’re planning to do something.”

“I see… Like launching an attack?”

“That seems to be the most likely possibility.”

“But you said it yourself. In the current situation, staying put and ignoring everything is the best strategy. Doesn’t that mean this would be suicidal?”

But that wasn’t necessarily the case.

“I said it was the best strategy, not that it was the only correct answer. There’s definitely a way to gain the upper hand by attacking. The problem is that the enemy wants that and is inducing it. While it’s difficult for the enemy to try anything when we’re just defending here, if we attack, the enemy’s options for dealing with us increase tremendously.”

“Hmm…. Then it should be fine. You might not know this, but General Dunan is an extraordinary person. He’s a natural when it comes to battle. If an engagement starts, the enemy will surely be badly burned by General Dunan.”

“I hope so.”

It was during this conversation.

Ding ding ding ding! The bell signaling an enemy attack.

“They’re here again. A bit early today. Ferge Infantry! Form formation!”

The enemy’s attack operation had become a daily routine.

But today seemed a bit different.

Thud thud thud! The amount of dust rising was much greater, and the time of the surprise attack was before noon rather than around sunset as usual.

“Brother Ferge! The enemy numbers are much greater than before! It looks like they’ve brought all available cavalry, so don’t spread out the infantry’s defensive formation, concentrate it in one place!”

“Understood!”

As I expected, the number of the enemy cavalry was on a different scale from before.

If until now they had launched surprise attacks with small cavalry units of 200 to 500, this time they attacked at once with nearly 1,000 cavalry.

Moreover, following behind that cavalry was an infantry of about 1,000 as well.

‘They’ve used all the cavalry they could…?’

It meant the enemy had made their decisive move too.

As if they had found something to break our army’s patience in this surprise attack.

“So that’s how they want to play it…!” I reacted immediately. “Brother Ferge. Let me borrow 200 men!”

“Alright. Malcolm! Follow my brother!”

Leaving Anton to guard Brother Ferge, I quickly headed to the rear with Yumir and Eo.

The supply tent located at the rear of the camp. That’s where Dorofei Grimwood was.

“Yahahahaha! The target is here! Capture them!”

“You can kill everyone except the target! We absolutely must not let the target escape!”

The enemy attacking with small numbers of guerrilla troops until now was to grasp the form of our main camp.

Imagine a camp so lax that you can have success in raids every day… I mean if this was intentional to draw in the enemy, then great, but honestly this just looks unprofessional.
