I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.

Chapter 73

Baron Brahe flicked his finger toward the trainers.

“Put this one aside. I’ll keep it for my personal collection.”

“Yes, understood.”

Thud!

Baron Brahe’s trainers threw down the vampire whose limbs were tied to a cross.

“Aaaaaaaaaah!”

As their nose and face were shattered, the vampire’s red blood leaked onto the floor.

The trainers hummed along to the screams as they dragged the vampire away.

Baron Brahe put a cigar in his mouth.

A mutant man with deformed limbs and a hunched back struck a match to light it.

“Jack. How’s the training of these ones going?”

Jack bent until his head nearly touched the ground as he spoke.

“It’s going well. Please don’t worry. Hehe.”

“Really? I don’t need to check?”

Jack prostrated himself like a dog before Baron Brahe.

“When have I ever disappointed you, Baron? I absolutely won’t make any mistakes.”

Sssssss.

Baron Brahe extinguished his cigar on Jack’s empty crown.

Despite what must have been painful, Jack only trembled without making a single groan.

“Last time you said it was going well too, and look what happened. Shouldn’t I check for myself?”

“…No sir. If there’s any problem this time, I’ll stake my life on it.”

Baron Brahe spoke while stepping on Jack’s head.

“Alright. I’ll trust you. There’s 3 hours left, so get ready.”

“Yes, understood.”

After Baron Brahe disappeared, the trainers who had taken away the vampire approached.

“Hey, bastard.”

Jack prostrated himself before the trainers.

“Yes! Please speak!”

“Can you really do this well? If you ruin the performance like last time, I’m the one who’ll get cursed out for managing you lot.”

“Of course! I thoroughly disciplined the one who made mistakes, so it won’t happen again!”

The men spoke while putting cigarettes in their mouths.

“Really? You sure?”

“Yes! I’m certain!”

“Then shall we take a look?”

“…Pardon?”

“What? You’re going to rehearse anyway. Let’s preview how much you’ve practiced.”

Jack spoke while reading their expressions.

“Well… The children are putting on makeup right now, so immediately would be… Ack!”

A large trainer kicked Jack in the side.

Jack choked and drooled.

“Fuck, why so many words when we say we want to see? What? You’re not ready yet?”

“Kugh… That’s not it… The makeup isn’t…”

“This bastard’s deflections are suspicious. This won’t do. We need to see for ourselves.”

The men passed by Jack and headed for the basement.

Jack crawled over to block their way.

“You can’t! We’re not fully prepared yet!”

“Why is this bastard making a fuss? You wanna die?!”

A trainer kicked Jack away.

Jack tumbled down the stairs unable to resist.

The subordinates went down to the basement while snickering.

In the basement were various mutants.

There were people with hunched backs like hunchbacks, people with three arms, and ones with deformed twisted arms like Jack.

“What the hell. These bastards.”

The only difference from usual was that they were holding weapons that they should never have, like axes and clubs.

“These bastards are trying to repay our kindness of feeding and housing them like this?”

“D-don’t talk nonsense! You never once treated us as humans! You treated us like bugs and monsters!”

Jack picked up a wooden stick nearby while trembling.

“We won’t take it anymore starting today.”

Jack waved his hand and said.

“Attack!”

“Uwaaaaah!”

The mutants charged in.

The trainers sneered at the mutants and cracked their necks.

“Yeah, it’s been a while since these bastards got beaten.”

Despite the considerable number of mutants, the trainers weren’t intimidated at all.

That’s because all the trainers were Aura users.

Thwack!

The trainers started to dodge or deflect the mutants’ attacks and knock them all down.

It was like a fight between ants and humans.

Even with weapons, the mutants couldn’t leave a single scratch on the trainers’ bodies.

From the start, the mutants who had never fought and only been beaten had no way to fight properly.

That’s when Jack grabbed a trainer’s leg and bit it.

“Aaaargh! You bastard!”

The trainer kicked Jack’s stomach with Aura.

Thwack!

Jack flew without even making a groan.

The trainer grabbed Jack’s head and growled.

“You dog, you dare bite me?”

The trainer slapped Jack’s cheek.

His lips split and teeth scattered.

Even while being hit, Jack’s eyes were focused on the other mutants.

Run away.

But the mutants couldn’t escape.

They were all knocked down by the other three trainers.

“Jack, let me ask one thing. Why did you plan such a pointless thing? I’m just purely curious.”

The trainer lifted Jack by his hair.

“You know too. That no matter how much mutant bastards like you charge at us, you can never win. Tell me quickly. Why did you do this on such an important day?”

Jack stared at the trainer with bloodshot eyes.

“Y-you all were planning to kill us all after today’s show. I-I definitely heard it. That we’re useless now that there are vampires and succubi.”

Teeth mixed with blood came out of Jack’s mouth.

“If we’re going to die anyway… Let’s die resisting… Try to survive somehow… That’s why we did it. Is that… Is that so wrong?”

“Hahahahaha!”

The trainers bent over laughing.

“Now I see what misconception this bastard had.”

The trainer patted Jack’s head.

“The reason those ones are in the freak show today is for Baron Brahe to show them to guests. After the freak show, rich nobles will buy them.”

“…What? Then why did you say you’d kill us…”

“It was just a joke, idiot. Did you actually believe that?”

Jack looked at his comrades rolling on the ground with empty eyes.

His comrades were all looking at Jack with vacant expressions too.

They weren’t going to die.

Then… All of this…

No, because of my wrong judgment, my friends…

Jack prostrated himself with all his strength.

“…I’m sorry.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. Those ones did nothing wrong. It was all my plan. So…”

Jack’s tears poured out with blood.

“Please spare my friends. I beg you.”

The trainer snickered while stepping on Jack’s head like he was trying to break it.

“What are you saying? Don’t you know that all who participate in rebellion face immediate execution?”

The trainer yanked Jack’s head up by his hair.

And lifted his head to show him the subdued mutants.

“Look carefully. These are the faces of those dying because of you. Ah, but before that…”

The trainer delivered a knee kick to Jack’s side.

Crack!

Jack collapsed with the sound of ribs breaking.

“Got to pay you back for biting my leg.”

Jack’s vision grew increasingly blurry.

He couldn’t hear anything.

Jack blankly stared at the trainers who had captured his friends.

Why was there such a difference between them and him?

Why was he born a bug while they lived as humans?

Jack just wanted to live like a person.

He just wanted to live like a proper person…

The guard whispered in Jack’s ear.

“We’re going to cut off your limbs very slowly before killing you. Like slowly tearing off a dragonfly’s wings before finally taking off its head. We’ll kill you very slowly and painfully. Look forward to it.”

“Oh, really?”

The guard turned his head at the unfamiliar presence behind him.

There stood a man with red hair and red eyes.

It was Caesar.

“…Huh?”

“Shall we try killing you that way first?”

Crack!

When Caesar’s right fist moved, the shoulder of the one holding Jack’s hair shattered.

“Aaaaaaaargh!”

The trainers who had captured the mutants were startled and picked up nearby axes and clubs.

“W-who are you!”

“Is that important?”

Caesar picked up a club lying nearby.

“Isn’t it more important that you’re all going to be screwed?”

The trainers charged at Caesar while shouting.

***

Caesar dusted off his hands while looking down at the guards with broken limbs.

“Damn bastards.”

Then he looked at the mutants.

There were many with bodies so deformed it made one’s brow furrow just looking at them.

While some may have been born as mutants naturally, among them there must surely be some who were ‘created mutants’.

Thinking that made curses circle in his mouth, but he held them back.

Caesar didn’t have much time.

“Due to time constraints, I’ll ask just one thing.”

The mutants gathered in a corner while trembling.

They looked like dust gathered and tangled in a corner.

“I heard there were demon tribe members imprisoned here – where are they?”

However, none of the mutants could speak.

They could speak but were being cautious of Caesar.

Just when he thought he might have to use psychometry on one of them, one finally opened their mouth.

“Cough…! If we tell you… Will you spare our lives…?”

A man’s voice emerged from among the mutants.

A hand covered in red blood protruded from among the mutants.

“Jack! No. If you move anymore, you’ll really die!”

“I’m… Already too late.”

Jack pushed away the mutants with what little strength he had and crawled out.

It seems the mutants were clustered together to protect Jack.

Caesar looked at Jack.

Even to Caesar, the hunchback’s condition didn’t look good.

“You said your name was Jack?”

“…Yes, that’s right.”

“I’m interested in the demon race, not really in you all. Once I finish my business, I don’t care whether you escape or not.”

“Is that true?”

“Yes. Where are the demon race members?”

Jack trembled as he raised his hand upward.

“If you go up through the red door here, there’s a prison. In the deepest part of that prison, there should be one vampire imprisoned.”

“1 person? What about the rest?”

“All at the freak show…”

Jack’s eyes began to lose focus.

“Please… Save those poor friends. The young ones imprisoned in jail too… Please…”

Jack began to beg pitifully.

His hands were so twisted they couldn’t touch each other, so he begged with his deformed elbows.

His appearance looked so desperate that a sigh escaped involuntarily.

“Sigh, fuck.”

Caesar was also at his wit’s end.

There were only 2-3 hours left until the freak show began.

This meant there was no time to dawdle like this.

“Please… My friends please…”

Thud!

Jack collapsed right there.

He’ll probably die if left like this.

Even if taken to a hospital, it probably wouldn’t help anyway.

“I’m not usually the type to meddle in others’ business.”

Caesar hoisted Jack, whose life force was fading, onto his shoulder.

“Hey, bring those security guards and follow me.”

Caesar came up, put Jack down, and held Thunder and Lefty in both hands.

Then he looked at the red door visible in the distance.

So that’s the prison they meant?

Caesar received the key from the mutants and put Jack down nearby.

“Run if you want to run, wait if you want to wait. But it would be better to wait. Even if you run, you won’t get far anyway.”

Then one brave mutant opened their mouth.

“…Are you helping us?”

“Not me, but I know someone who will help you.”

Caesar opened the red door.

Beyond it stretched a long corridor made of thick steel doors, and security guards could be seen by a door in the distance.

There were six of them.

“Who are you?!”

Whoosh! Thwack!

Instead of answering, Caesar threw Thunder.

The man’s head who was hit by Thunder completely disappeared and Thunder penetrated the steel door like tofu.

And the wind blades that spread from Thunder slaughtered all the security guards.

The mutants were all so surprised by Caesar’s amazing martial prowess that they couldn’t even open their mouths properly.

Caesar opened and entered the deepest prison door.

There was another steel door there, and there were more security guards.

Bang!

The security guards hiding beside the door fired their guns.

But Caesar just tilted his head to dodge and then drove the axe handle into the guards’ forehead.

The guards collapsed without even making a sound.

Caesar looked through the iron bars at the vampire bound to a cross.

The vampire’s body was covered in scars and their nose had become hooked.

“You…”

The vampire looked at Caesar while drooling at the smell of blood coming from all directions.

Caesar covered his face and then revealed it again.

It was ‘Derrick’s’ face.

“It’s a doppelganger.”

Caesar returned his face to normal.

“…Have you come to save me?”

“Of course. We’re comrades after all.”

Caesar destroyed all the iron bars and cut all the chains that were binding him.

Caesar pointed at the unconscious security guards.

“Eat them. I deliberately kept them alive.”

The vampire, without a word of thanks, sank his fangs into the dead man’s neck.

He must have been that desperate for blood.

Slurp- Slurp.

“Urghhhh!”

As if sucking out life rather than blood, the man became a mummy in an instant.

The vampire wasn’t satisfied with just one and drank the blood of the person next to him too.

Then the scars disappeared and his withered skin and hair regained their vitality.

“Ha…”

The vampire sighed with an expression that suggested he might live.

“Thanks, doppelganger. But you’re a bit late. All the other comrades were taken to some place called a freak show.”

“Fuck, are you serious?”

“…What?”

“Put your soul into saying thank you. Is that how you act towards someone who saved your life?”

“…Thank you? Doppelganger.”

“Forget it. All vampires are like this.”

The vampire said while picking up and putting on the security guards’ clothes. “By the way, what do you plan to do about the other comrades?”

“We’ll save them.”

“By yourself? That would be impossible, wouldn’t it?”

“There are other comrades.”

A black pigeon flew over the prison and landed on his shoulder.

“Seems they’ve arrived just in time.”

The vampire’s expression was filled with joy for the first time.

“Then we can slaughter those damn hot-blooded ones.”

“Before that.”

Caesar pointed at the mutants peeking through the door far away.

“There are those who have suffered at the hands of humans longer than you have.”

“So what do you want me to do?”

“If you can make them your blood kin, do it.”
