I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.
Chapter 72
A man covered in blood from head to toe approached the border guard trench.
“Stop. Stop. Who are you?”
“…It’s me.”
The man staggered and collapsed in front of the trench.
The guards examined the man’s face with torches.
Though it was hard to recognize him with his hair soaked in sweat and blood, it was definitely Derrick, one of Smuggler King’s men.
“…Squad leader, what should we do?”
“Let’s hear what he has to say first.”
The squad leader and guards came out of the trench and secured the perimeter.
The squad leader poured water over Derrick’s head.
Derrick drank the water running down his face as if it were holy water.
“What happened?”
“…Met a pack of sky alligators on the way. Bad luck.”
“So you lost all the goods?”
“Yeah. Except for this one.”
Derrick took out a bundle of 100 del bills from his large bag and handed it to the squad leader.
The squad leader counted the numbers and nodded.
“As thorough as ever with these things.”
“Can I rest for a while?”
“We’ve known each other for a long time, of course we can do that much.”
The squad leader whistled to gather his squad members.
“Clean him up a bit and give him spare clothes if you have any.”
“Yes, understood.”
Derrick entered the trench supported by the squad members.
After lying down with his bag, Derrick caught his breath.
The squad leader gave him a cup of tea and said:
“By the way, you’ll get an earful from King for losing all the goods.”
“Living things are tricky to handle.”
“True. Those tiny things do run wild all over the place.”
Derrick’s expression changed subtly.
“By the way, I wonder how to explain this to Baron Brahe. He seemed to need more goods recently.”
“Really? I heard Baron Brahe doesn’t need any goods because he struck it big.”
“What? There was no such talk when I was getting the goods?”
“Makes sense. It’s quite recent news.”
The squad leader whispered:
“I heard a succubus, of all things, will appear in this Freak Show.”
“…A succubus.”
“Yeah. They say those succubus bitches are damn seductive. I heard getting tickets was quite difficult this time.”
“Are those tickets perhaps all sold out?”
“Of course. Even the old noble gentlemen seem desperate to see it.”
Derrick nodded.
“I see.”
Derrick got up, dusting himself off, and searched through his bag.
“Hm? What do you see?”
And Derrick’s face and body started to change.
Into red hair, red eyes, and a giant figure exceeding 190cm.
“I see it’s fine if you all die.”
Caesar pulled out Thunder from the bag.
“Do-Dopple…”
KWAAAANG-!
The trench collapsed under the lightning bolt that burst from Thunder.
***
Caesar washed the dried blood and dust from his hair and lay down on the hotel bed.
As soon as he lay down, gunshots rang in his ears.
TANG, TANG!
“This place is a mess too.”
Despite getting a room at the highest-class hotel near the border by paying a hefty sum, it seems gang fights were breaking out nearby.
The public order in the Dior Kingdom has certainly deteriorated a lot.
‘Well, it is that kind of time.’
The Dior Kingdom’s financial situation is more serious than the Eileen Empire.
While the Empire can at least hold on because of its size, the Dior Kingdom wasn’t wealthy enough to wage war in the first place.
The nation was becoming more and more of a mess with various setbacks occurring one after another, including national debt from reckless war, unemployment, bankruptcies, and more.
Caesar put that aside for now and closed his eyes.
Just in case thugs tried to enter like in Homigraph, he blocked the door with a large wardrobe, so there would be a loud noise if someone tried to force their way in.
How long did he wait with his eyes closed?
At some point, Caesar found himself in the middle of a flower garden.
The flower garden swayed beautifully in an unfelt wind.
Try as he might to focus on the flowers, the more he concentrated, the blurrier they became.
This is a shared dream world.
“So it’s Caesar this time?”
Agatha was sitting in a garden chair, sipping tea.
Caesar looked around and said:
“Was it always like this?”
“Can you see this flower garden now?”
“Yes.”
Caesar sat across from Agatha without much interest.
“But I can’t smell anything.”
“Smell is the hardest thing to implement in dreams.”
Agatha said while swaying her severed tail.
“And I’m still incomplete too.”
“When will that tail fully regenerate?”
“Don’t know. Probably at least 5 more years?”
“5 years? That long?”
“There are hardly any humans here to absorb life force from, and this isn’t the demon realm. I do absorb some life force while helping merpeople with insomnia, but that’s just a formality to satisfy urgent needs.”
Agatha’s eyes turned mischievous.
“Of course, if I could eat plenty of someone’s life force, it might reduce to about 3 years.”
“Stop joking around.”
“Can’t I joke around this much between us?”
Agatha poured tea for Caesar.
“Well, if you ever have a dream you really want to have, just tell me. I can help with that much.”
“You can make people have dreams they want?”
“Of course. That’s how I help merpeople and comrades suffering from insomnia. I absorb a bit of life force in return.”
“Isn’t the purpose of dreaming to wash away physical fatigue? Wouldn’t it be worse if you absorb life force?”
“Physically, yes. But some people suffer because they’re having dreams they don’t want to have. Sometimes people would rather be a bit tired physically if they could have the dream they want just once. Haven’t you ever felt that way?”
Caesar took a sip of tea.
It was just warm water with no taste.
“It would be a lie to say never.”
“How did you overcome it?”
“I just lived day by day desperately until I stopped dreaming altogether.”
Caesar put down the tea.
“Enough small talk, shall we get to the main point?”
“Did you find the location of our comrades?”
“Yeah.”
“Wait a moment, I’ll give you permission to edit the dream.”
When Agatha waved her hand once, a pink magic circle was engraved on the back of Caesar’s hand.
“What’s this?”
“Try imagining one object you want.”
“Hmm… Oh?”
Thunder and Lefty appeared in Caesar’s hands.
“This is interesting.”
“That’s how it works. This should make it easier to talk, right?”
It’s like some futuristic AR meeting.
Caesar waved his hand like a magician.
Then Thunder transformed into a ‘ticket’.
“This is a Freak Show ticket.”
“Freak Show? What’s that?”
“It’s a circus that’s popular lately. They bring in people who grew deformed or mutants and make them into spectacles.”
“Huh? Why would anyone watch that?”
“I wouldn’t know. How could I understand the desires of those perverts.”
Caesar made the ticket disappear and created a map of the Dior Kingdom.
“Back to the main point, if this is the Eileen River, this is the Fiona River. The Fiona River is the second largest river in the Dior Kingdom and slightly north of the Eileen River. And at the lower reaches of this Fiona River, there’s a pleasure city called Sodom.”
“Is that where the Freak Show takes place?”
“Right. There’s a circus director named Baron Brahe who runs the Freak Show. I heard they’re putting on a show in a week. And…”
Caesar zoomed in on Sodom and pointed to the Grand Theater where the Freak Show takes place.
“Demons will appear here.”
“Why would demons be in a Freak Show… Ah…”
Agatha was so genuinely angry that the entire dream shook.
The flower petals burned away and the sky turned gloomy.
“Those bastards are going to turn our comrades into spectacles?”
“That’s probably why they bought them. Though I’m not sure if all 30 are there.”
“Are you sure our comrades are here?”
“Yeah. First, let’s calm down? The dream is about to collapse.”
“Ah, sorry.”
When Agatha regained her composure, the flower petals returned to normal.
“Anyway, here’s what’s important. From my personal investigation, Sodom is a pleasure city where demons have seized real power. That means there’s a high possibility that demons will appear in large numbers at this Freak Show.”
Of course, Caesar didn’t actually investigate this, it’s all content from the game.
Unlike Homigraph, Sodom is a space very closely tied to the main story.
Its influence is so high that whether you destroy it before the demon overflow occurs or not affects the difficulty of the demon overflow story.
“How did demons take over that city?”
“They might have hidden their hideous faces with magic or used proxies.”
“Then what should we do? Demons are trickier to deal with than humans.”
“That’s why you all need to step in if possible. If we combine succubus charm magic and vampire force, we can cause confusion even if demons appear. During that time, I can rescue the demon race to where the mermaids are.”
“Okay, I understand. But the plan seems a bit insufficient?”
“For now, let’s just set up this framework. It’s not easy to make detailed plans when we have so little information right now.”
“Hmm… Alright for now.”
Agatha fell into thought while looking at the map.
“By the way, if it’s a week later… Assuming we get help from the mermaids, we should be able to arrive just in time. But it won’t be easy to launch a surprise attack like we did at the Eileen River.”
“I’m in the same situation. Even if I change horses along the way, it’ll be cutting it close given the distance. By the way, are you sure we can get help from the mermaids?”
“Well… There is a bit of an uncertain situation…”
“What’s going on now?”
Agatha let out a small sigh.
“It seems there was a small dispute among the mermaids regarding our treatment. Because of that, we’re in a somewhat awkward situation.”
I think I understand what she means.
From the mermaid’s perspective, the succubi and vampires are like immigrants.
Since their usefulness isn’t certain, and the merpeople have to go through the trouble of providing food and shelter, it must mean they feel awkward about continuing to make difficult requests.
“Seems it’s not easy on your end either.”
“I’ll handle the problems here on my own.”
“I don’t care.”
“Would it kill you to at least pretend to care, you jerk?”
“Well, I’ll at least remember that you’re worried about such things.”
Agatha smirked.
“It’s really hard to get you to show proper gratitude.”
Agatha stretched out her finger toward Caesar.
“Well, it’s time for us to part ways.”
Agatha’s finger gently touched Caesar’s forehead.
“Sweet dreams, then.”
***
Thwack!
Caesar irritably split the highway robbers’ heads with his axe.
“Fuck, there’s an annoyingly large number of them.”
Since it mustn’t be discovered that Caesar is in the Kingdom of Dior, there’s nothing to gain even if he cuts off their heads.
In other words, it’s not profitable work.
At best, he might get some small wallets or jewelry that the robbers carry around?
In the past, he might have been satisfied with just this, but now it’s mere pocket change compared to the scale of business Caesar runs in Homigraph.
Caesar searched through the robbers’ possessions and only took out the paper money.
“Well, at least I don’t need to exchange currency.”
The currency used in the Kingdom of Dior is naturally different from what’s used in the Eileen Empire.
They use a unit called Zeto, named after the first king of the Kingdom of Dior, or something like that?
Anyway, thanks to this, he was able to make it near Sodom cleanly without needing to worry about fund tracking.
Caesar wiped his blood-stained Lefty with a cloth before putting it in his bag.
Then he looked at the city visible in the distance.
“It’s quite bright.”
While Homigraph is bright at night too, it’s not to that extent.
That place is a city of pleasure that shines even brighter at night.
Sodom.
According to the game’s description, it was originally a barren land where proper farming wasn’t possible due to the high salt content in the soil.
However, it developed significantly after prostitutes and male prostitutes who were driven out from nearby cities began living there, turning it into a city of pleasure where all sorts of base desires could be fulfilled.
It’s said that because there are no churches, knights, or nuns, demons also came to live there in hiding.
Caesar checked his ticket.
“Dawn today, huh?”
The road to Sodom was longer than expected, and he was quite delayed because of the outlaws.
He needs to hurry and check if the demon tribe members are alright.
For that, the first place he needs to head to is the ‘Slaughter house’ run by Baron Brahe.
***
Baron Brahe brought down his whip.
Whoosh!
The sharp glass pieces attached to the end of the whip scraped across the vampire’s stomach.
“Nnnggggh…”
Blood splattered, but the vampire couldn’t scream.
Their voice was hoarse from screaming so much.
“What kind of blood is it this time?”
“Uh… Fish blood, sir.”
“Feed it.”
The guards brought a bucket filled with fishy-smelling blood and placed it in front of the vampire.
The vampire drooled.
“Nnnggggh…”
Drawn by the fishy blood smell, the vampire eventually buried their face and licked up all the fish blood.
Then the wounds on the vampire’s back healed instantly.
“No… No…!”
The vampire wailed at being unable to resist the urge to drink the fish blood.
Crack!
When Baron Brahe struck the ground with his whip, the vampire’s body reacted violently.
“Aaaaaagh! Aaaaaaaaah!”
“How fascinating.”
Baron Brahe pulled the vampire’s head up and looked at their face.
This pale creature could recover by drinking any type of blood.
He thought they could only recover by drinking human blood, but it seemed they could recover as long as the blood was red.
“Now I understand why vampire fellows became so notorious. To think they can regenerate just by sucking blood.”
Crack!
Baron Brahe cracked his whip in the air again.
The vampire screamed again.
“Aaaaaagh!”
No wounds appeared on their body.
But they screamed as if they had been struck by the whip.
Baron Brahe let out a low laugh.
“Though it seems they can’t recover from mental trauma.”
