I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake. Chapter 53

I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.

Chapter 53

A man wearing a deeply pulled-down hood walked through an unkempt garden.

The pool was filled with trash instead of women, and the grass had grown unsightly, having not experienced a scythe for a long time.

The man approached a blue-haired man sprawled near the pool with a bottle of alcohol.

It was Viscount Duken.

As soon as he heard footsteps, Viscount Duken transformed his bracelet into a gun and fired.

Bang!

The bullet hit the man’s hood, knocking it back.

Under the hood was Andromalius, his face wrapped in old bandages.

Viscount Duken looked up at the man and furrowed his brow.

“Now even demons are freely entering and leaving my house.”

“It seems anyone could easily enter, not just demons. The front gate was open.”

Viscount Duken picked up a nearby liquor bottle, emptied it into his mouth, and then threw it towards the pool.

“Those damn debt collectors. If they’re going to strip everything, they could at least close the front gate properly before leaving.”

Andromalius observed Viscount Duken, heightening all his senses as if appreciating an unfinished work of art.

“You look absolutely terrible.”

“Can’t be helped.”

Viscount Duken staggered to his feet.

“All the people who used to kiss my ass are dead, and all my slush funds have been completely burned up. Now I’m in a state where I have to sell this house too.”

Viscount Duken laughed like a derelict, picking up a rolling liquor bottle and emptying it entirely into his mouth.

“Even though my money supply has dried up now, the Duken family has been producing magicians and dealing with magic towers in this land for over 200 years.”

“There are quite a few people who know they won’t be safe if they mess with me, so I’ve been thinking long and hard about who they trust to threaten and extort me.”

Viscount Duken aimed his revolver at Andromalius.

“But the only answer I could come up with was you guys, ‘Niflheim’. Because I’m not unaware of how you control people.”

“I suppose you intend to push my mind to the brink, making me lick your toes and beg for my life. Just like now.”

Viscount Duken’s finger tightened on the trigger.

“So tell me. What do you want from me?”

Andromalius appraised Viscount Duken.

“You’re still not ripe enough.”

“You son of a bitch!”

Viscount Duken pulled the trigger.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

All the bullets hit Andromalius directly in the head.

As the bandages were torn away by the bullets, Andromalius’s face was revealed.

Even upon seeing that hideous and disgusting appearance, Viscount Duken did not hide his anger.

“It was you bastards after all! You cursed creatures!”

“Even so, what can you do now?”

Tentacles emerging from Andromalius’s fingertips entwined Viscount Duken’s hands.

“Aaaargh!”

“The reason the Duken family could strut around in Sapientia for the past 200 years wasn’t because they were nobles, nor because they had a lot of money.”

Andromalius scrutinized Viscount Duken from all angles, like a pottery master contemplating whether to destroy a hot piece of porcelain fresh from the kiln.

“It’s because all the heads of the Duken family were magicians. But only you, uniquely, are not a magician. Why do you think that is?”

“You…!”

“It’s because I helped you. If it weren’t for my help, you wouldn’t even be in that position.”

The tentacles bound Viscount Duken’s entire body.

And the tips of the tentacles wavered in front of his mouth and nose, and then…

Whoosh!

The tentacles violently churned Viscount Duken’s insides.

“Urrrgh!”

“And yet, thinking you’re something special, you dare to glare at me and feed me lead bullets?”

Viscount Duken’s body trembled violently.

The feeling of the creature’s tentacles stirring his stomach was indescribably horrific and painful.

His previously fierce gaze softened, and his eyes became docile.

“Until five years ago, you were nothing. Even when your father brought in an adopted son to succeed the Duken family, and when that boy was appointed as the heir, you were just sucking your thumb.”

“I gave clothes to and taught human language to a useless, greedy pig-dog, and now he thinks he’s on the same level as me.”

Andromalius whispered into the ear of Viscount Duken, whose eyes were rolling back.

“Do you want to die?”

“…Ungh!”

Andromalius released Viscount Duken.

“Bleuurghh!”

Viscount Duken started vomiting what was inside him.

But no matter how much he vomited, purple sticky liquid kept pouring out endlessly.

“Wh-what did you feed me?”

“Night Maker.”

“What?!”

“Don’t get excited. What if you turn into a demon? Well, that wouldn’t be too bad either.”

“Gi-give me the antidote. Please. I don’t want to become a demon.”

“There is no antidote.”

“You bastard!”

Andromalius took out a small bottle from his pocket.

“Instead, if you listen to me well, I’ll give you a suppressant.”

Viscount Duken’s hand hesitated.

“…Suppressant?”

“At least you won’t turn into a demon due to excessive emotions.”

Andromalius took out a file from his pocket and threw it in front of Viscount Duken.

“These are items coming in the day after tomorrow. Somehow procure them and spread them in Homigraph.”

Viscount Duken checked the documents with trembling hands.

“Wh-what is this…?”

“Drugs.”

Viscount Duken’s hand hesitated.

“Dr-drugs are not okay. Drug distribution within Homigraph is too easy to trace. And if caught, I’ll be branded as a heretic.”

Andromalius threw a bag.

The money inside the bag spilled out like entrails.

“Do you think you’re in a position to refuse right now?”

“…No. This is the one thing I can’t… Aaaaargh!”

Andromalius grabbed Viscount Duken’s hair.

“Then become a demon. Right now, you’re like a time bomb about to explode. With a little stimulation, you’ll turn into a demon. How about it? Want to feel what it’s like to become a demon like me?”

“…Ungh! At least I should know what the plan is! It’s not like you guys are trying to distribute drugs just to make money!”

“We’re trying to catch Caesar.”

“Wh-what?”

“It’s better if you don’t know the detailed plan. But at the end of that plan, Caesar will be there.”

Andromalius released Viscount Duken.

“So you just need to do your part well.”

Andromalius flicked his hand.

Then, from the trash-filled pool, a small, writhing piece of flesh emerged.

However, as a sign of being a demon, three purple horns were growing on its flesh.

“This will protect you for the time being. It has no name and no self. Just think of it as raising a silent pet.”

“You want me to carry around something so unusual?”

“Put it in a bag or in your stomach, do as you please. But this will definitely save you.”

Andromalius pulled his torn hood down deeply again.

“So be faithful to your role. Viscount Duken.”

“Uwaaaaah!”

Andromalius glanced at Viscount Duken, who was bursting with miserable anger.

The end of someone who participated in an irrefusable gamble.

It seems Andromalius had been watching Viscount Duken for a long time to see this anger mixed with tears.

“He’ll be useful as a disposable.”

Andromalius left, leaving a small smile.

When morning training was over, Caesar called for Gloria.

Caesar handed Gloria a small shield-shaped badge that shone silver.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a badge showing that you’re my assistant.”

“Assistant?”

“The annual salary is 60,000 Del. There are additional incentives depending on your performance.”

“No, I mean, what exactly am I supposed to do?”

Caesar wore a badge on his chest that was identical to Gloria’s but shone golden.

“Cracking bad guys’ skulls.”

“…Is it something like the police?”

“Well, you could see it as something similar. How does it feel to get your first job?”

“Just… Okay, I guess.”

Ah, come to think of it, this isn’t her first job.

Just half a year ago, she was a mafia boss.

By the way, a mafia boss becoming a sheriff’s assistant.

Isn’t this material for a hilarious web novel?

“But who would stick 60,000 Del a year up their nose?”

“You’re well-fed, aren’t you? What rookie cop gets 60,000 Del? At most, it’s around 20,000 Del.”

“But I’m an Aura user.”

“That’s why I’m giving you three times more. Stop arguing, go wash up, change into comfortable clothes, and come to the front of my house.”

“Don’t I need to train in body strengthening techniques?”

“We’ll squeeze that in later when we have time. More importantly, didn’t you say you didn’t want to borrow money from your dad? Then shouldn’t you start earning money from now on?”

Gloria hesitated for a moment, then nodded.

“You’re right about that.”

“Then I’ll give you 20 minutes. Hurry, wash up, change, and come.”

“Yes sir!”

***

After briefly hearing about the situation in the carriage, Gloria nodded.

“So, we just need to catch the person in charge of drug distribution, right?”

“Yes. But the answer is already out there.”

“Pardon?”

Caesar handed over a photograph.

“The person in charge of drug distribution is Viscount Duken. I don’t know where he’s getting it from, but he’s bringing in drugs through smuggling.”

“Then isn’t it all done? Can’t we just raid now?”

“But much of the evidence has been damaged. No, to be precise, the witness has been damaged.”

“What do you mean the witness has been damaged?”

Because there’s a stake from Tina stuck in the witness’s anus.

What would people say if we brought that person to court?

They’d probably ask if the stake would come out if they tightened their sphincter.

Ah, is this what I’m curious about?

“Anyway, there’s something like that. So we’re in a situation where we need to find new evidence.”

“Hmm… It’s complicated.”

“Well, do you have any ideas?”

As Gloria thought, Caesar used psychometry.

-Drugs have been around for a long time.

-The drug Viscount Duken is bringing in is easily manufactured opium.

-Then it seems right to start by taking down those who sell tobacco powder…

-There are a few guys in Homigraph who deal with this stuff.

Is it because she’s a former mafia boss?

As soon as the question is thrown out, the answers come pouring out.

This is why I appointed her as an assistant.

Gloria, who had been seriously contemplating, tilted her head and then spoke.

“…How would I know that? Wouldn’t you know, Sheriff Caesar?”

Oh ho, pretending not to know?

Well, this is the right response.

“Still, let’s put our heads together. How is opium usually smoked?”

“Well, that…”

-It’s usually rolled and smoked with regular tobacco.

“…How would I know that?”

“Our assistant seems quite incompetent. Are you just a muscle-head?”

Gloria stammered at this scathing criticism she had never heard before.

“M-muscle-head?! Isn’t it strange for me to know such things in the first place?!”

“Then I guess the incentive will fly away. Maybe it would be better if I moved alone.”

Gloria frowned, seemingly hurt in her pride, and said,

“Well… Since opium is lit and smoked like tobacco, wouldn’t it be available at places like tobacco shops?”

“You think they sell opium at ordinary tobacco shops?”

“They would probably sell it at illegal street vendors that aren’t registered businesses.”

Gloria pointed to a street vendor carrying cigarettes and various knick-knacks on a handcart.

“Like that.”

“The answer comes out right away.”

Caesar tapped on the carriage, and it stopped.

“Then go.”

“Pardon?”

“Go and investigate. I’m too famous, so if I show my face, girl fans will come running while screaming. It interferes with the investigation, you see.”

-…How annoying.

Didn’t you like me until just recently?

Why did your feelings suddenly cool?

Did I push you around too much?

“If I find something, you have to count it as an achievement.”

“Of course.”

Gloria opened the carriage door and went to the street vendor.

She exchanged some words with the vendor, then suddenly grabbed the vendor’s collar and shook him around like beating laundry.

Dino, who was driving the carriage, carefully opened the carriage door and said,

“Sir Caesar, shouldn’t we stop that?”

“Leave her be. She’ll handle it.”

After dusting off the street vendor thoroughly, Gloria got back into the carriage with a prim expression.

“Did you find out anything?”

“Here.”

Gloria handed Caesar a container of opium powder she had taken from the street vendor.

“Oh ho. He really had it?”

“The opium distributor has changed recently. Originally, a guy named Jimmy had a tight grip on the Core area, but now a guy named Nixon has taken over Jimmy and is in charge of opium distribution.”

“Who’s Nixon?”

“I don’t know about that.”

-Who on earth is Nixon? Where did this guy roll in from?

-Is it Nixon the Hatchet? No, that guy doesn’t touch opium, he sells beer.

It seems she really doesn’t know either.

He must be a newcomer who appeared like a comet, or someone using an alias.

“So what should we do? Should we go find Nixon?”

“Did you find out where he is?”

“No. The street vendor didn’t receive it from Nixon directly, but from his underlings.”

Gloria crossed her legs and said,

“So what should we do?”

Caesar used psychometry on the opium container.

He was able to find out where the opium was packaged.

The location where this opium is packaged is a small tobacco manufacturing factory in Eastline.

It would be good to raid this place right away, but what’s more important is to capture Nixon, interrogate him, and then catch Nixon’s higher-ups.

If Viscount Duken is directly above Nixon, things would be easier, but there’s a possibility he’s not, so it wouldn’t be bad to find him and extract information first.

“When we don’t know their location, there’s only one way. Make them come to us.”

“What? Is that possible?”

“There’s a very easy way.”

Caesar pointed to another passing street vendor.

“Ruin their business.”
