I Killed the Demon King. It Was a Mistake.
Chapter 107
Caesar spoke as he got off the carriage.
“What brings you here?”
Yugar took out a whiskey bottle tied to the saddle and shook it.
“I wanted to have a drink with you.”
Bell let out a deep sigh.
“Really, Dad…”
“What? Just men having a drink together.”
Yugar said with a grin.
“How about it, want to have a drink together?”
Having drinks with someone you’re supposed to have a life-or-death duel with tomorrow?
Does that make any sense?
“I’d like that.”
“I knew you’d accept!”
But I do want to have a drink.
Just as Gloria considers Bell her favorite, Yugar was my favorite character in my game.
And I doubt Yugar came here without any purpose.
***
Caesar grilled meat himself in the garden.
All of Caesar’s household members came out to set up the table and place the dishes.
Yugar seemed quite interested in the scene as he looked around.
“Do you always eat so casually?”
“It’s better to enjoy it together when we’re eating. Is this uncomfortable for you?”
“No, I like this kind of thing too.”
Caesar placed some meat on the grill, then threw a large pig’s leg to two wolves who were drooling.
Thud!
But the two wolves didn’t eat the meat Caesar threw.
They were just watching Yugar and Bell’s reactions.
Yugar spoke to the two wolves.
“Garum, Blue. Eat.”
Only then did the two wolves eagerly tear into the meat.
They seem very well trained.
Seeing that makes me want to get a good mount too.
Something like the Pegasus I rode during the Demon Realm War would be nice.
Caesar brought the properly cooked meat to the table.
And sat facing Yugar.
Yugar poured drinks in front of Caesar.
The color of the alcohol was red like wine but had a strong sweet smell.
“It’s a traditional drink from the Hironeel region. It’s made with honey so it should taste quite good.”
“I’ll enjoy it.”
Caesar took a sip of the drink with Yugar.
Perhaps because it was made with honey, it was really sweet and delicious.
“How is it? Tasty, right?”
“Yes. It’s really sweet.”
“But don’t let your guard down. Even though a child could drink this, it’s strong enough to knock out a yeti. The hangover is terrible too.”
“But when else would I get to taste such a precious drink?”
“That’s true too.”
As Caesar and Yugar enjoyed the meat and drinks, others also carefully joined in enjoying the food and alcohol.
Yugar seemed to like the ribs, setting aside his fork and knife to tear into them with both hands.
Caesar also ate the ribs without maintaining formalities.
A rib followed by a drink.
A rib followed by a drink.
As they continued like this and both Caesar and Yugar were getting tipsy in the mood.
Yugar opened his mouth.
“What I said earlier was half true.”
“You mean about it being a waste to die?”
“Yes.”
Yugar took a long drink.
“I heard some stories about you on my way here. A knight who drove out all the homigraph eating mafia, hunted devils, and erased the Freak Show circus from this world.”
Yugar filled his glass again with alcohol.
“And the knights you’ve fought until now. They were all notorious ones. Knights who betrayed their lords or killed people like it was nothing, trash knights. You deliberately chose to duel such people first, right?”
“That’s correct.”
“Why did you do that?”
“Most of the knights who challenged me to duels didn’t do so of their own will.”
Yugar’s hand stopped as he was taking a drink.
He had anticipated what Caesar was about to say.
“The nobles who run the knight orders are supposed to receive compensation from the Imperial state, but hardly any nobles have received proper compensation. But the nobles have already poured a lot of money into the Demon Realm War and are in such financial straits that they can barely pay their knights’ salaries.”
“In this situation, the Royder Order came pressuring the lords with money bags. Saying they would pay if they killed me. That’s a very despicable act that those who believe in the goddess shouldn’t commit.”
Yugar spoke while pouring another drink.
“Do you think those nobles made the wrong choice?”
“From my position, it’s hard to forgive. After all, my life is at stake. But I can understand. When you live as a ruler, there are times when you have to get your hands dirty with both excrement and blood. I think they’re exactly in that situation now.”
Caesar took a sip of his drink before speaking.
“But shouldn’t we hate the sin rather than the person? If they sent me even one letter asking for forgiveness or came to apologize in person, I would be willing to forgive them in most cases.”
Yugar let out a hollow laugh and took a sip of his drink.
“Sounds like those words were meant for me.”
Oops, I’ve been found out.
In his heart, Caesar doesn’t want to fight Yugar.
Because Yugar is one of the few men who firmly maintains his belief in protecting humanity in this rotten world.
“Margrave Hironeel, what reason do you have for challenging me to a duel?”
Yugar drank again.
After staying silent for a while, he finally spoke.
“My son is dying.”
Yugar drank again.
“I decided to kill you and save my son. That’s all there is to it.”
Son?
Who’s this son he’s talking about?
Caesar quietly touched his feet with Yugar’s.
And used psychometry.
Then he saw a gray-haired man lying in bed, breathing heavily.
The man was panting as he lay in bed.
Red spots had bloomed on his skin, and in the center of those red spots, flesh was festering and rotting.
Yugar was looking down at that man with a heart that was not just torn, but burning with anguish.
Caesar turned off the psychometry.
Caesar knew who this person was.
‘…Triba Hironeel.’
The legitimate heir and eldest son of the Hironeel family.
Why is he dying from illness?
Has the future changed again?
No, that’s not what’s important.
Triba is the only heir who can continue the Hironeel family line.
If such a person is dying, Yugar has no choice but to act personally.
Because if something goes wrong, the Hironeel family line could end.
Now all the threads of the incident seem to be unraveling.
When Caesar came to his senses, his empty glass was being filled with alcohol.
“I don’t want to kill you. You’re an honorable knight. Righteous and upright. As a selfish father of a child and the head of a family, I want to ask you something.”
The giant’s rough hands, which looked like they could uproot a mountain, trembled.
“Could you accept defeat?”
Caesar downed the full glass of alcohol.
“That’s impossible.”
At the immediate response, Yugar nodded as if he had expected it and downed his drink.
“Impossible, he says…”
Yugar chewed over Caesar’s words with a thick accent.
“Yes. That’s what makes you an honorable knight.”
Yugar’s trembling hands stopped.
His golden eyes flashed from behind the moon’s shadow.
“Then please use all your strength. I shall do the same.”
***
The night Yugar and Bell left.
Caesar wrote a letter and handed it to Harrison.
“Send this to Professor Smir. And get a response as soon as possible.”
“What is this?”
“If all goes well, we might not have to fight Yugar.”
Harrison’s eyes flashed.
“I will definitely get a response.”
“Good.”
Caesar put a cigar in his mouth.
Red spots with festering, rotting skin.
Though it looks like leprosy, the symptoms are completely different with the high fever and comatose state.
That’s one of the endemic diseases of the demon realm called ‘Decay Sickness’.
I heard recently that Smir has been researching demon realm diseases, so he might know the treatment.
‘…I hope Smir can solve this.’
If he can’t, there’s no choice.
We’ll have to fight until one of us dies.
***
The next day
Harrison left only a note and didn’t return.
[Professor Smir asked us to wait a moment. He seems to see an answer.]
Though I can’t know exactly what’s happening in the magic tower, Smir isn’t the type to talk nonsense, so he’ll surely come with an answer.
The only regret was not getting a proper response before having to face Yugar in the dueling ground.
Caesar stood in the middle of the dueling ground that smelled of dry dust.
In front of Caesar was Yugar, with whom he had shared drinks last night.
Yugar was wearing his beloved weapon ‘Luminion Fury’ and the armor ‘Frost Blade’ that symbolizes the Hironeel family.
Even standing alone, he seems to fill the entire dueling ground.
Am I going to fight that monster now?
Gideon carefully opened his mouth.
“Sir Caesar. Do you really intend to fight?”
“Yes.”
Caesar received Thunder and Lefty from Gideon.
At the same time, he handed the potion bottle he had just drunk to Gideon.
“You could die.”
Gideon grabbed Caesar’s wrist tightly.
“I know. But it’s also clear this is a fight I can’t avoid.”
Caesar said while loosening his shoulders once.
“I don’t plan to die easily, so just toss the coin well and go. Understood?”
“…Understood.”
Caesar slowly walked toward Yugar.
His heart was pounding and his whole body was sensitively heated up.
It might be because of the ‘stimulant’ he took, or it might be excitement about having a duel with Yugar.
When he got close enough, Caesar stopped.
“So it comes to this.”
Yugar drew out the Luminion Fury that was hanging on his back.
When Yugar drew the Luminion Fury, the ‘Frost Blade’ that had been holding it returned to its original state.
Luminion Fury looked more like a mysterious club than a greatsword.
It was full of strange scratch-like gaps and the blade was dulled, seeming to focus more on crushing things than cutting them.
However, through the splits in the greatsword, a mysterious blue-green light emitted a faint glow, making it not feel like a simple club.
Yugar shifted Luminion Fury to his right hand.
“No. I already expected it would come to this. That’s what makes it tragic.”
Parts of Yugar’s full plate armor began to detach with a thud- thud- and started slowly orbiting around him.
On Yugar’s heart area was a highest-grade magic stone emitting a brilliant blue light and a mechanical device that was completely draining all the magical power contained in that magic stone.
This was the legendary artifact and the armor symbolizing Margrave Hironeel.
Frost Blade.
Without penetrating through those swirling sharp armor pieces, one couldn’t even scratch Yugar’s body.
“Any last words?”
“None.”
“I’ll let you have the first move.”
“You’ll regret it.”
The spectators held their breath as they looked back and forth between Caesar and Yugar.
There were quite a few people in the audience that Caesar knew.
Gloria.
Viscount Bellum.
Gideon.
Gregory Walterwood.
Finn Beckin.
Miles Parker.
Joseph.
And others who had formed bonds with Caesar.
He suddenly remembered what Joseph had said before entering the dueling grounds.
-Forfeit the match.
-Please. Sir Caesar, you absolutely cannot win against Yugar.
-You could really die.
Even without using psychometry, he could tell.
Joseph thought Caesar would die in this duel.
-I’ve already heard that from others until my ears are calloused.
-Just cheer for me from afar.
Caesar took a deep breath.
The dry, stuffy winter dust brushed against Caesar’s nose.
Familiar.
This is the smell of death.
Gideon flipped a coin.
And without looking, ran to the entrance of the dueling grounds.
The coin seemed to fall unusually slowly.
Was he nervous?
No.
All of this is the power of drugs.
“Uriaaaaaaah!”
Berserker triple stack.
Caesar charged at Yugar like a steam-spewing locomotive.
The frost blades automatically analyzed Caesar’s attack route and rushed in.
The frost blades aren’t artifacts that just anyone can use.
While the energy source for the frost blades is the highest-grade magic stone located in Yugar’s heart area, moving each of those blades relied solely on the wearer’s senses.
The sight of Yugar moving more than 25 blades as if they were his own hands was reminiscent of a one-man knight order.
Caesar swung his axe once at the blades flying toward him.
Hung!
Noisy Silence activated, deflecting the blades aimed at Caesar’s face, groin, and heart in one go.
However, the other 22 blades were flying in to sever Caesar’s tendons and limbs.
Caesar could perceive the direction of all those countless blades.
Thanks to Smir’s stimulant effect, all his senses had become more than three times sharper.
Caesar pushed against the ground even more intensely.
Thump Thump Thump!
Yugar couldn’t believe what he saw.
The frost blades, which could cut through even the solid bones of the Yeti, all bounced off upon touching Caesar’s skin.
He had heard through the Royder Order that Caesar was a tank-type knight.
Wasn’t it said that needles and sharp blades couldn’t cut Caesar’s skin, and bullets couldn’t pierce it either?
But he never thought that he would be able to block the frost blades without any damage.
Oh my God!
Yugar blocked Caesar’s thunder.
‘The strength…!’
This is completely different from yesterday’s Caesar.
Yugar’s left knee momentarily buckled.
Pajijijijik!
Blue current flowed from Thunder through the Luminion Fury, but the Luminion Fury was completely unfazed.
This was because all of Caesar’s current was absorbed through the gaps in the blade.
But Caesar has two weapons.
‘Where’s the left axe?’
An alarm rang in Yugar’s head.
The axe in Caesar’s left hand had disappeared at some point.
That’s when Bell shouted.
“Father!”
Caesar’s left axe was flying precisely toward the back of Yugar’s neck.
‘Behind.’
Yugar rolled to the side, disregarding his dignity.
That judgment was accurate.
The axe that had ridden the wind brushed past Yugar’s cheek and returned to Caesar.
Caesar caught the axe and pressed Yugar.
Caesar knew very well that you should press harder when the opponent’s balance is disrupted.
At that moment, the frost blades came together to form a thick steel barrier, blocking Caesar’s path.
Caesar struck down on the barrier with thunder.
Ding!
The barrier shattered into pieces, clearing the view.
Through that gap, the Luminion Fury thrust in.
Perfect timing indeed.
The tip of the blunt greatsword that momentarily disappeared from view and thrust in was as sharp and deadly as a wolf’s claw.
While others would never be able to block or dodge such an attack, Caesar was different.
Caesar knew through ‘psychometry’ that Yugar would come like this.
Caesar dodged the Luminion Fury with an agile body and swung his left axe.
Yugar, despite his massive build, succeeded in avoiding Caesar’s axe with incredibly flexible and quick reactions.
But it wasn’t a perfect dodge.
The whirlwind wrapped around Caesar’s axe had directly hit Yugar’s stomach.
Kang!
Yugar’s chain mail became rags, exposing his body.
Yugar’s body bore evidence of bloody battles protecting the Imperial state and its people from Yeti and fierce monsters.
From his right shoulder to the end of his left pelvis ran four thick, long scars.
And on his right side was a scar that looked like something had pierced through.
There were countless other small scars too numerous to count.
Gulp!!!
And a sharp stream of wind from Caesar finally penetrated the chain mail, creating a new wound on his left side.
Yugar touched the wound on his left side.
“This is completely different from yesterday.”
“Didn’t you tell me to go all out?”
Caesar prepared to charge again.
“So I’m just going all out.”
