Chapter 36: Marny’s Shop, 1st Floor
“Tenma, it’s different from our plan, but would it be alright if we stopped by Marny’s shop first?”
“I don’t mind, but what kind of shop is Marny’s?”
“Leather goods and magic tools, plus luxury items. Marny’s shop is big – the 1st floor sells leather goods and magic tools, and the 2nd floor sell luxury items.”
“Luxury items? Like jewelry?”
“That’s right. They sold rings, necklaces, and pocket watches too.”
“Pocket watches? What kind of things are those?”
“Sorry. I’ve never seen one. Leaf, do you know?”
“Sorry, I don’t know either.”
While the three were talking, they arrived at Marny’s shop. A sign reading “Leather goods and magical tools, Jewel Marny” was hanging there. When they entered the shop, Mario and Marny were sitting at a table, chatting pleasantly. Mario, who noticed the three people entering, immediately voiced his complaint.
“You three are late. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting? Two and a half hours. Two and a half hours. I was about to get full from tea.”
Hearing Mario’s complaint, the three grimaced. Marny said with a wry smile,
“Welcome, we’ve been waiting for you. Today, as thanks for yesterday, I’ll give you a 20% discount on whatever you buy.”
“Ohhh, that’s appreciated. Right away then. Could you show me some boots for Tenma? Size 8, lace-up ones that can withstand exploration quests.”
“Understood. Please wait a moment.”
Marny answered and called a shop clerk, giving instructions. Tenma looked around the store and stopped at the corner with Magic Pouches and Magic Water Bags.
Marny approached and explained the products.
“These Magic Pouches have the capacity for one barrel for the small ones, and even though they were waist-bag size, they can hold 10 barrels worth. The backpack type has a capacity for 30 barrels. All of them had weight reduction magic applied, so you only feel the actual weight of the bag itself. But I heard Tenma has an Item Box, so I think you might not need them?”
“That’s right. I do have an Item Box, but wouldn’t that be conspicuous?
Alf invited me to his party. I think Item Box holders are that rare and valuable, so I’d like to take out minimum items from a Magic Pouch – that way my Item Box won’t be discovered either.”
“I see. With that thinking, I recommend the type that can register magic power. These over here are like that. They are a bit pricey though. The material is magic beast leather. It is enchanted with weight reduction, magic memory, waterproof, stain-proof, material reinforcement, time delay, and theft alarm. Up to 5 people could be registered as users.”
“If a registered person dies, do the contents stay as they are?”
“No. This type requires shops to keep records of who they sold to. At the same time, we carve the shop’s mark on the back of the clasp and on the bag, so you can tell which shop’s product it is. With those two things, you can tell who purchased it. And when the purchaser died, or if it was involved in a crime, guards and the purchaser’s guild can both be present while the seller or a magician who can use Dispel confirms the contents. If there are multiple magic registrations, this process happens when all the people who registered their magic have died.”
“I see. Then, I’ll take this one.”
Tenma chose a waist-bag type with belt loops attached. He then asked Marny for recommendations on Magic Water Bags.
When Tenma asked about Magic Water Bag recommendations, Marny began explaining apologetically.
“Magic Water Bags didn’t have that many varieties. And they were a bit hard to use – basically they were close to disposable items.”
According to Marny’s explanation, Magic Water Bags only produced water equal to the magic stone’s capacity. The water magic needed to be recharged into the magic stone. Recharging required requesting it from the Mage Guild. The price was 70 copper coins each time. The amount of water that came out was 1.2 times the water you could buy for the same amount. If the party didn’t have a water-attribute magician, the running costs became high. So shops sold them starting from a minimum price of 1 small silver coin and bought them back for 10 copper coins. That’s why most adventurers bought regular water bags or bought Magic Pouches to store water.
After hearing Marny’s explanation, Tenma looked at the Magic Water Bags. Even with size differences, they were basically all wine bag shapes. Among them, a bamboo water bottle caught his eye. It had leather straps attached so it could be hung from the shoulder. Before that, he was surprised that bamboo existed in this world too.
Looking at the back, a beautiful light blue stone was embedded. This must have been the magic stone, he thought, and when he touched it, something was being absorbed.
“Huh, Marny. Were the magic stones in Magic Water Bags empty?”
“That’s right. We charged the magic stones with magic power after you decided to purchase. We had dedicated enchantment and water-attribute magicians on staff, so was there something?”
“Sorry. I’ll buy this one too. It seemed like my magic power was just absorbed.”
“Huh. Tenma, did you have water-attribute magic power?”
“Yes.”
“I apologize for that. Well then, I’ll give you this one. Originally, we ordered it because the material was unusual, but it had poor reviews. We were even considering returning it, and it was priced at the minimum anyway. Since Tenma charged it with magic power, I can’t take the 70 copper coins. Considering the main price of 1 small silver coin and paying 10 coins for trade-in, that was 20 copper coins profit.”
“Is that okay? Then I’ll gratefully accept your offer.”
“Please do. This material is bamboo. It was enchanted with stain-proof and material reinforcement. It is something you can use for a long time.”
“I am a bit curious – does the number of enchantments depend on the material?”
“That’s right. For ordinary materials, depending on quality, up to 3 maximum. For magic beasts or magic wood, up to 8 enchantments are possible. For legendary-class materials – dragon fangs or hide, or ores like Adamantite or Orichalcum – it is said that 10 or more enchantments are possible.”
“I see. Thank you for teaching me.”
The shop clerk who had received instructions earlier called out to Marny.
“Tenma. The boots seemed to be ready.”
When told that, he turned around to see three pairs of boots on the table.
When Marny and he moved to the table, the Serpent members also came over. Once everyone was gathered, Marny solemnly began explaining the products.
“The material for these – the sole plate is Ebony, the leather is Salamander. The sole plate has slip-proof, stain-proof, and material reinforcement. The leather has waterproof, stain-proof, and material reinforcement, plus the material’s natural properties of heat retention and fire attribute resistance. The laces are also Salamander leather laces.
Next, the sole plate is Ebony, the leather is Wyvern. The enchantments are the same, but the material properties include flight and wind attribute resistance. Flight means increased walking speed, running speed, and jump power. There are individual differences, but you can also expect increased airtime. The laces are also Wyvern leather laces.
Finally, the sole plate used 5 layers of Wyvern leather magically combined into one piece. The leather was Salamander. The sole plate has waterproof, slip-proof, stain-proof, and material reinforcement. The leather has waterproof, stain-proof, and material reinforcement. Plus it has the properties of both materials. Also, kicking power was increased. This is a synergistic effect of fire and wind attributes. The laces are either Salamander or Wyvern.
From the right, they cost 1 small silver coin, 1 small silver coin and 80 copper coins, and 2 small silver coins and 50 copper coins.”
“Expensiiive!”
Alf raised his voice upon hearing the prices. Leaf and Mario were frozen.
“Could I try on the ones with Wyvern sole plates?”
The Serpent members looked at Tenma with surprised faces upon hearing his words. Marny showed a beaming smile and said,
“Please do. You were welcome to try all three pairs.”
He put his feet in the boots and tightened the laces. Walking a little, he felt the effect of the Wyvern sole plates. Each step’s slide extended by one foot’s worth, and his walking pace was faster than usual – this wasn’t Tenma’s will. This was probably something only the person wearing them would understand. Also, because of the leather sole plates, the soles naturally followed his foot movements. The ones he bought at Eva’s shop inevitably had a hard feeling, but these boots didn’t. Moreover, he had a sensation like he could feel the floor’s texture through his soles.
“I’ll buy these.”
When Tenma indicated his intention to purchase, the Serpent members made exasperated faces, and Marny deepened his smile further,
“I’ll include both Salamander and Wyvern laces. Is there anything else you need?”
“Could you show me the pocket watches?”
Marny answered Tenma’s words with a smile.
“Of course. Before that, could you please settle the bill once?”
Items Tenma bought: Magic Pouch waist-bag type, 1 small silver coin. Magic Water Bag bamboo water bottle, received as a gift, Boots, 2 small silver coins, and 50 copper coins.
With the discount, he paid 3 small silver coins.
