Chapter 33: The Origin of Serpent
In the morning, Tenma, who had been sleeping, woke up to the sensation of something pressing against his left arm and ribs. Wondering what it was, he looked at the bed. There was something that looked exactly like the ‘automatic wake-up device’ used by â—‹R [an organization]. The only difference was that there was no hose to be seen. This must be a Magic Tool as well.
Tenma got ready and went downstairs. It seemed that the members of Serpent hadn’t come down yet. Finding an empty table for four, Tenma took a seat and decided to wait for Serpent. As he sat down, a waitress approached.
“Shall I bring you breakfast?”Â
“No, I have companions, so please wait until we’re all together.”
“Understood.”
As the waitress left the table, Leaf took a seat, arriving just as she departed.
“Good morning, Tenma. Are Alf and the others not here yet?”
“It seems not. More importantly, Leaf, you’re quite strong with alcohol, aren’t you?”
“That’s right. When I first became an adventurer, I used to drink it instead of water. Last night’s amount only got me slightly tipsy.”
According to Leaf’s explanation, drinking water costs 5 medium copper coins for one water bag. However, ale can be bought for 3 medium copper coins per water bag. Until she obtained a Magic Water Bag, she used to fill water bags with ale.
“Speaking of which, have you all been together as Serpent for a long time?”
“Hmm. I suppose it’s been long? It’s been about 5 years since I joined, and we became Serpent.
Before that, it seems Alf and Mario were teamed up. When I first met them, Alf was C-rank. Mario was D-rank like me. Then, on my first day joining, we all drank together, and the next morning, Mario said the party name should be Raptor, and Alf said please spare me from that, so we became Serpent.”
“So Mario was the one who named Serpent? The reason Alf disliked Raptor was probably because of this place, right?”
“Probably so. It seems Alf can’t stand up to his uncle here.”
“Who can’t stand up to whom?”
Tenma had noticed that Alf and the others were approaching, but Leaf hadn’t. It was no wonder that Leaf nearly fell from her chair when Alf suddenly called out to her.
“What were you talking about?”
“Leaf was telling me about the origin of the Serpent’s name. I heard that Mario was the one who named it.”
“That’s right. More importantly, you two are late, aren’t you?”
When Tenma told Alf what they had been discussing, Leaf added words as if to deflect.
“Is that so? You two are just early, right? It’s only 8 o’clock.”
“More than that, let’s have breakfast. Excuse me. Four breakfasts, please.”
Alf said he wasn’t late, and Mario calmly ordered breakfast. The waitress’s voice returned with “Understood.”
Breakfast was brought to the table. The menu consisted of bread rolls, vegetable soup, salad, fried eggs, and some kind of sausage (wiener). The waitress said that bread refills were free and left the table.
Alf and the others began eating without saying anything. Tenma watched them and followed suit. In his heart, he said, ‘I humbly receive this meal.’
Just like last night’s meal, breakfast was also delicious. The bread was comparable to what he had eaten in Japan. Could there be plants similar to wheat in this world too? The soup also had good stock from the ingredients.
Tenma was grateful that the food culture level in this world was quite high. In Tenma’s mind, he had the arbitrary image that typical medieval meals = crude meals. Yet here he was, able to eat such delicious food and see some amazing magic tools. While being transferred here and then abandoned still made him angry, for the first time since coming to this other world, he thought ‘It was good that I came to this other world.’
