Chapter 30:  Magic Tool Developers and Tomorrow’s Plans

Surprised by the Magic Tools at the inn, Tenma asked about them.

“Changing the subject, the Magic Tools in this inn are amazing. I was impressed by the Magic Tool in the hall, and also the hot water faucet in the room. That’s a Magic Tool too, right?”

“Yes, that’s also a Magic Tool. The room lights are too.”

“Oh. How do I turn off the room lights?”

“Just say Lights off and they’ll go out. Also, the ones here will turn off if you lock the door from outside.”

“They’re well-made. Who created them?”

“They were made by three Magic Tool crafters: Akira who was called a genius of innovation, ‘Hitomi’ who was known as the fountain of knowledge, and Takumi the demon of standardization.”

These three appeared about 100 years ago, and for the following half-century, Akira would conceive ideas that Hitomi would bring to reality, and Takumi would devise methods for mass production. Thanks to them, daily life has become much more convenient. Hot water faucets, Light Ball illumination, refrigerators for preserving food, and so on—life without their Magic Tools is unimaginable now.”

While Tenma listened to Mario’s explanation, the thought ‘Aren’t those three people from another world?’ crossed Tenma’s mind.

“Are those people still alive today?”

“They’re probably deceased. People don’t live for 100 years. However, official records don’t state that they died. Back then, there was no Magic Tool Guild yet—they created the guild themselves, so we don’t even know if they had Guild Cards. The last record only mentions that they left this country heading eastward.”

“I see. But isn’t an inn with so many Magic Tools rare?”

“I wouldn’t say rare, but they are certainly not common. Particularly, there are only two inns in Gomena where you can bathe in your room, this one and one other.”

“Speaking of which, is there such a thing as a Magic Tool Guild?”

“Yes, there is. In the royal capital.

When developing a Magic Tool, you must inquire with the guild in the royal capital to verify whether similar Magic Tools already exist or if existing technologies were utilized. You can’t sell without passing their inspection. If you’re using existing Magic Tools or technologies, you could sell after paying usage fees.

Magic Tools with new technology could be sold as was, and if others used that technology to create and sell Magic Tools, you received usage fees. If you made and used them personally, no usage fees were charged.

Among Magic Tools, Magic Bags, Magic Sparks, Magic Water Bags, and items excavated from Dungeons are exceptions with no restrictions on production or sales. This is because these Magic Tools existed before the Magic Tool Guild was established.”

As Tenma listened to Mario’s explanation, he became convinced that the three were people from another world. Not just their names, but what Mario described sounded like the concept of patent rights.

Separately from Magic Tools, Tenma asked about something that’s been on his mind:

“Changing the subject, how much is the inn fee? Also, the cost of this meal, and who should I pay to?”

“The meal is our treat. The inn fee is 5 medium copper coins with the family discount. Usually it’s 1 copper coin. If you plan to use this place in the future, I can introduce you to the owner, my uncle.”

“Please do, I’d appreciate that.”
