Chapter 29: Rank-Up and Guild Card
“By the way, how do you perform a Rank-up?”
Tenma’s question caused the members of Serpent to exchange glances.
“Garf didn’t tell you that either? Geez, that guy.
“Listen, for a Rank-up, you just need to complete the required number of requests or exploration quests of your current rank. However, if you fail once, it counts as only half a completion. From C-rank and above, five failures will drop you one rank. There’s also promotion through monster subjugation, which you’ve experienced.”
“For solo subjugation, from G to E rank, you need to defeat 5 monsters evaluated one rank above yours. D to C requires 3 monsters. B rank and above needs just 1. For party subjugations, the monster numbers increase to 15, 7, and 3 respectively. That’s how individual ranks increase. Also, for B rank and above, there are additional written exams, interviews, and practical tests. Incidentally, if you drop from B to C rank and want to return to B, there’s no test.”
“You sound like you’re speaking from experience, Alf.”
Following Alf’s explanation, Mario said this to him. Alf’s gaze says “that was unnecessary.” Tenma thought âIs Mario self-destructive by nature?â but didnât say it aloud.
“So naturally, adventurer Rank-ups are processed at the Adventurers Guild. Guild Card reissue costs 1 small silver coin.”
Besides the Adventurers Guild, magical power registration can be done at the Sorcerer Guild, Alchemist Guild, Merchant Guild, and Mercenary Guild. Whether you have magical power registration directly affects your personal credibility. In the royal capital, most guilds issue Guild Cards with magical power registration.”
“You can use a Guild Card issued by any guild as identification. If you join another guild, they’ll add an entry under ‘Affiliations.’ By the way, the Sorcerer Guild only requires that you can use sorcery. I believe the Merchant Guild charges 1 small silver coin for issuance and 1 copper coin for membership. I don’t know about the others.”
Mario supplemented Alf’s explanation.
“Also, if you do something bad, it gets recorded on magic-registered cards once the guilds become aware of the crime.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, it is. For example, if an adventurer kills someone for a legitimate reason, like eliminating bandits, there’s no problem.
However, if you kill someone without justification, you must report to the guild or the guards, explain the situation and reasons, and await their judgment. If found guilty, you’ll receive penalties such as rank demotion or qualification revocation, with the reason recorded on your card. Additionally, according to town regulations, you’ll face punishment ranging from community service to enslavement.
If you don’t report it, your qualification will be automatically revoked and the crime name will be recorded on your Guild Card. Recordable crimes include murder, robbery, rape, fraud, theft, and arson.
Conversely, medals and ennoblements are also recorded.
Sometimes, you might receive communications from the guild, so I recommend checking every three days or so. For urgent matters, the card will flash and become warm. That’s why many people wear it around their neck. There’s even a hole for that purpose.
Also, just a side note, but among people with non-magic-registered Guild Cards, there are occasionally criminals, so it’s good to know that.”
Mario explained in detail after Leaf’s rough explanation. As mentioned, there’s a 7mm hole in the upper left corner of the Guild Card. Apparently, you pass a string through it.
“By the way, nobles have Status Cards instead of Guild Cards. They’re basically the same as Guild Cards, but revocation is a right reserved for the king and certain individuals, so it rarely happens without extreme circumstances.”
“That’s why there’s no end to foolish nobles causing trouble. Well, Lord Baltza who rules this territory is one of the decent ones.”
Alf continued after Mario’s words. Tenma recognized the name “Baltza” that appeared in Alf’s statement. He never expected it to be the name of this territory’s lord. Come to think of it, Tenma recalled they had mentioned the capital city was called “Baltza.”
“I see. So if you lose your Guild Card, you need a reissue. Bad deeds get recorded on your Guild Card. But if you have a Guild Card of someone who died or was killed, their misdeeds wouldn’t be discovered, right?”
As he heard Tenma’s words, Leaf said:
“Tenma, are you stupid? That’s impossible. It disappears.”
“Calling him stupid is harsh, Leaf. Tenma just doesn’t know. Tenma, Guild Cards with magical power registration and nobles’ Status Cards return to their place of issue when the owner dies.
For Guild Cards, they return to where they were issued. If registered with multiple guilds, the owner can designate which guild it returns to. For Status Cards, they return either to the church where the blessing was received or to the royal castle.”
After hearing Mario’s explanation, Tenma understood the amazing feature of magic-registered Guild Cards and why the corpses, including Roderich von Baltza’s, didn’t have Guild Cards or Status Cards.
