Chapter 23: Tenma’s Treatment and Entering GomenaÂ
“Yeah. Around these parts. In some country somewhere, our hair would be the unusual one, I hear.”
Alf continued speaking.
“Well, it’s just unusual. In short, Tenma, you stand out. After we enter Gomena and deliver Marny to his shop, we’ll head to the Adventurers Guild. There, we’ll register you as an Adventurer and raise you to F-rank. That’s also with me vouching for your solo defeat. It’s impossible for you not to stand out. If someone like that is carrying a Magic Iron sword, it’ll draw unwanted attention. That’s why I’m letting you use my spare weapon. And tonight, you’ll move around with us. Got it?”
Despite his complaints, it seems he’s concerned about Tenma’s welfare.
“If it’s not troublesome for you, please take care of me.”
Although they had only spent about half a day together, Tenma felt he could trust Alf and the Serpent group. That’s why Alf’s invitation was appreciated.
“So tomorrow, first we’ll go buy clothes and shoes. Next, we’ll visit weapon shops and armor shops. And after that… the Sorcerer Guild. Mario?”
“Yes. I’d like to request the Sorcerer Guild first, but since Tenma’s clothes are also unusual, that order is fine.”
It seemed Tenma’s plans for tomorrow were decided. From Alf’s explanation, Tenma learned about the dangers of casually using the Magic Iron sword. That’s why he was thinking of buying a weapon. If the Serpent group would accompany him, it would be reassuring. Well, regarding the Sorcerer Guild, he resigned himself thinking, ‘It can’t be helped,’ and said:
“Thank you for your help.”
While they were talking about such things, the city gate drew near.
In front of the gate, several carriages and people formed a line. The carriages passed through with almost no problems. Almost because they were stopped at the gate, where soldiers checked something before letting them through. People dressed like the Serpent group, people carrying backframes or bags, people in various attire—watching them, most passed through with ease. About one in ten was detained by soldiers and disappeared to the side of the gate. After a while, they would return with the soldiers and enter.
While they observed such scenes, it became Tenma’s turn. Three soldiers, one of whom stood in front of the carriage. The other two approached the driver’s platform.
“Where are you from?”
“From Baltza, the domain capital, along with a merchant. We’re adventurers hired to escort the merchant.”
In response to the soldier’s inquiry, Mario showed some kind of card. Poking his face out from the back, Alf also showed a card and parchment to the soldier. The same kind of exchange happened behind the carriage, where Marny responded.
“You with the black hair. Your identification too.”
“Identification? I don’t have any.”
“What do you mean you don’t have any?”
The soldier’s tone hardened at Tenma’s answer. Then Alf said to the soldier:
“This guy is Tenma, whom we picked up along the way. His identity is guaranteed by me, Alf, the leader of the B-rank adventurer group Serpent. Our Magician has also confirmed it. If you doubt it, check for yourself.”
“Yes. I’ve confirmed Tenma’s name and that he’s not a criminal using Lie Detection.”
Following Alf’s answer, Mario continued.
Tenma thought about when he had been subjected to Lie Detection and realized it was when he first met Mario. But he didn’t feel uncomfortable about it. At that time, he thought it was unavoidable.
The soldier seemed to accept Alf and Mario’s answers, and said:
“Then, 1 copper coin for five people, 1 medium copper coin for the carriage, and 1 copper coin for the luggage. In total, 2 copper coins and 1 medium copper coin. Who’s paying? Are you paying separately?”
“I’ll pay.”
Alf handed the copper coins to the soldier. The soldier who received them signaled to the soldier in front. The soldier made way, and when Mario whipped the horse, the carriage quietly began to move.
Tenma was excited to see a city in another world for the first time.
