Chapter 109
“Ugh!”
The mage stumbled backward, startled by Zeke’s flash bang skill.
In that moment, Zeke rushed in with wind technique and swung his sword at the mage.
Slash!
The mage’s body wavered before turning into black smoke and reappearing elsewhere.
He glared at Zeke with glowing red eyes.
“You wield an unfamiliar power.”
The mage shouted at the hounds who still couldn’t open their eyes properly from the flash bang.
“You fools! Get up and catch him!”
The hounds, who had their eyes recovered with the mage’s help, stood up and surrounded Zeke.
Zeke clicked his tongue softly and swung his sword imbued with temple power.
SWOOSH!
SLASH!
Unable to block Zeke’s sword, the hounds died as their necks were severed in one strike.
As the hounds died, the mage began chanting an incantation in an eerie voice.
WOOOOO!
An ominous energy gathered around the mage.
After killing all the charging hounds, Zeke ran toward the mage with his sword.
At that moment, as if completing his spell, black energy rose from the mage’s body.
The black energy seeped into the dead hounds’ bodies.
CRACK!
When the black energy penetrated them, the dead hounds twisted their bodies and stood up.
GRRRRRR!
The hounds’ severed limbs reattached, and they charged at Zeke with swords again.
‘What the hell are those things..?!’
Though internally startled, Zeke swung his sword at the dead hounds.
SLASH!
But even when their limbs were cut off, the hounds quickly reattached them and charged at Zeke.
GRAAAAH!
It seemed this would never end no matter how much he swung his sword.
Seeing the sinister energy flowing from the dead hounds, Zeke realized he needed a different approach.
‘Looks like I’ll have to use purification.’
If he dragged this out longer, other hounds might arrive and completely block his escape route.
Zeke automatically equipped Agamemnon’s Mask to his face using the auto slot.
Then he unleashed his purification skill at the charging dead hounds.
WOOOONG!
Golden waves spread from Zeke’s body and enveloped the hounds.
“KE, KEAK!”
“KUHUK!”
The hounds hit by the golden waves twisted their bodies, black blood flowing from their eyes, ears, and mouths.
Soon black smoke erupted from their entire bodies.
Zeke used his lightning skill on the hounds.
CRACKLE!
The hounds, their bodies burned by lightning, fell to the ground charred black.
Seeing the hounds fall again, the mage looked at Zeke in disbelief.
“Y-you neutralized the power of death? Im-impossible…”
The mage realized the knight before him was no ordinary intruder.
He struck the ground hard with his staff.
“I absolutely cannot let you leave.”
Suddenly cracks began forming in the floor where the mage struck.
CRACK!
Starting from where the staff hit, the entire laboratory floor split and began collapsing.
Zeke fell down along with it.
“Damn!”
He tried to float up using wind power, but the mage wouldn’t allow it.
WHOOSH!
Black energy flowing from the mage’s staff blocked the hole above like dark clouds.
Zeke swung his sword at the dark clouds.
But though they dispersed briefly, the clouds regathered and tried to envelop Zeke.
“Get away!”
Zeke avoided the dark clouds while climbing down the wall.
He used his purification skill on the dark clouds.
WOOOONG!
The dark clouds touched by the golden waves scattered into black ash.
But Zeke ultimately couldn’t climb up and fell down the wall.
THUD!
As soon as he hit the ground, Zeke surveyed his surroundings with dragon eyes.
‘Where is this?’
It seemed the area below the laboratory was connected to ruins.
It appeared to be a temple carved entirely from sandstone walls, so vast the ceiling wasn’t visible.
Zeke gaped in amazement at the massive scale of the ruins.
Though Zeke had entered many dungeons in his past life, even he had never seen ruins of this scale.
After briefly marveling at the size, Zeke quickly collected himself and looked for a way out of the ruins, wary that the black-robed mage could appear anywhere.
If the hounds deployed their full search network, his identity could be exposed.
Cautiously watching his surroundings as he entered deeper into the temple, he came upon a space lined with massive pillars bearing distinct Joint tribe patterns.
At the end of the space was what appeared to be the temple entrance.
‘Strange that the temple entrance is here. Then the excavation site outside might have been where the ancient Bird tribe lived.’
If residential areas and temples were together, there would be an enormous amount to excavate. It made sense why the Empire was so desperate to claim this territory, given the discovery of a dungeon of this scale.
Moreover, the Bird tribe was historically famous as a race with mysterious powers.
The Emperor was clearly trying to discover the secret of immortality from the Bird tribe ruins.
Zeke approached the temple entrance.
However, a massive stone statue stood before the entrance.
Zeke recalled the picture he saw on the laboratory wall earlier.
A Bird tribe warrior wearing thick armor.
The statue before him looked exactly like that.
‘The pressure is considerable.’
Just as Zeke tried to enter deeper into the temple to find a way out.
RUMBLE!
Suddenly the statue began to move.
CRACK!
The statue of the Bird tribe warrior lit up its eyes and swung its halberd.
WHOOSH!
Zeke jumped back in surprise.
“Damn, what is that? A golem?”
Though he’d seen golems in dungeons in his past life, he’d never seen one this large.
Then unknown words flowed from the Bird tribe golem.
Fortunately, the system translated the language.
[Temple intruder detected. Eliminate enemy.]
Suddenly flames blazed from the golem’s eyes and it breathed huge flames toward Zeke.
“HAH!”
Zeke deployed the will of ‘Defense’ with his soul power.
The flames split and scattered without touching Zeke’s body.
The golem’s sudden appearance and continuous attacks left Zeke reeling.
That’s when it happened.
SCREECH!
Space split and the mage who had been hiding appeared before Zeke.
He spoke to Zeke in an eerie voice.
“That golem eliminates any temple intruders. If you want to live, you must surrender to me.”
A massive golem in front, suspicious mage behind.
Nowhere to retreat.
‘Damn. One mountain after another.’
Then the system message window appeared.
[System has detected a Guardian in safe mode.]
[Administrator system control possible if Guardian access code is recognized.]
Zeke was startled by the system message.
‘System, how can I recognize the golem’s access code?’
[Humanoid Guardian access codes are typically engraved on the core inside the left chest.]
The heart area in human terms.
‘So I need to extract the core from inside its heart.’
Zeke pointed his sword at the massive ancient golem.
The one fortunate thing was that the mage wasn’t controlling this golem.
Zeke gripped his sword and ran toward the golem.
The black-robed mage was shocked that Zeke would face the golem and shouted.
“Y-you fool! That’s not something humans can face!”
The mage who wanted to capture Zeke alive grew anxious that the golem might kill him.
While the mage was flustered, Zeke had already approached the golem. As Zeke approached, the golem swung its axe at him.
WHOOSH!
The mage behind reluctantly used magic to distort space and block the axe.
SCREECH!
‘As expected.’
Taking advantage of the mage blocking the golem’s attack, Zeke raised his sword.
WOONG!
Soul power gathered in his sword.
Zeke called upon the will of the most powerful single spell word.
‘Destroy’
RUMBLE!
The will of destruction dwelled in Zeke’s sword.
Simultaneously, Zeke thrust his sword long toward the golem’s heart area.
BOOM!
The powerful word power collided with the golem’s heart area.
The mage watching from behind was shocked.
“W-what is that?”
It was a type of power he’d never seen before.
A completely different wave from the knights’ aura power.
As the mage dismantled the barrier in his greed for Zeke, the golem’s axe fell toward Zeke.
CRASH!
Dust clouds rose as the temple floor was gouged.
The mage tracked Zeke’s presence through his magic eyes.
Magic eyes that could see beings’ souls couldn’t be avoided by any magic or skill.
“There!”
The mage detected a life form and used magic.
But what burst from the dust cloud wasn’t Zeke.
“KAAAK!”
The chimera Gurab charged at the mage.
“UGH!”
The mage stepped back avoiding the chimera.
At the same time, Gurab spat poison needles at the mage.
SCREECH!
The mage who blocked the poison needles with space distortion gritted his teeth.
“Damn! Wait, aren’t you Gurab’s chimera?”
The mage recognized Gurab’s chimera from the Scorpion Clan elder.
Suddenly something clicked in his mind.
“It’s you! The one who attacked the southern continent laboratory!”
Rumble!
Black energy erupted from the mage’s body.
At the same time his eyes turned red.
The atmosphere completely changed from moments ago.
“If you’re the one who killed Cain, I must capture you.”
As the mage stared with red eyes, Gurab retreated in fear.
But as if not letting him go, he raised his hand toward Gurab.
That’s when it happened.
WHOOSH!
Wind blades flew toward the mage.
SCREECH!
The mage blocked the blades with space distortion.
When the mage turned his head, he saw Zeke riding on the golem’s shoulder.
The mage looked at Zeke with an expression of disbelief.
“H-how did you control the Celestial Golem?”
It was incomprehensible.
How could a knight, not even a mage, control a golem that even the knowledge of Narak couldn’t handle?
Zeke commanded the Guardian.
“Catch him.”
RUMBLE!
The Guardian’s eyes glowed.
Simultaneously, its mouth opened wide.
A bright light rose inside the Guardian’s beak.
ZING!
Massive light poured from its mouth.
BOOM!
The pillar of light engulfed the mage.
“Ugh!”
He quickly tore through space to avoid the light pillar.
‘I must escape for now!’
Indeed, he was one who had swallowed the vessel. He might die before capturing his target.
He hurriedly tried to tear space and hide, but strangely his magic wouldn’t work.
“Could it be?”
Zeke’s magic reflection skill had sealed the mage’s magic.
The mage pointed his staff at Zeke.
“You wretch!”
Zeke jumped from the golem’s shoulder and charged at the mage with his sword.
SLASH!
Zeke’s sword cut off the mage’s arm and stabbed his stomach.
“KUHUK!”
The mage fell to the ground from Zeke’s sword.
Zeke approached the mage, removed his black robe, and checked his face.
Strange patterns covered the mage’s face, and an unfamiliar rune character was branded in the middle of his forehead.
Zeke held his sword to the mage and said.
“Answer my questions and I’ll spare your life.”
The mage panted.
Zeke asked him.
“What is the Abyss?”
The mage smiled grimly and said.
“You’ve… disturbed….. ‘cough’…. an existence that should never have been touched…”
“Bold words for a dying man.”
Zeke pushed the mage down completely and stepped firmly on his neck.
“KUHUK.”
“You don’t seem to be from the Scorpion Clan. Are you from another illegal clan researching forbidden magic?”
The mage remained silent.
Zeke decided to use his last resort without wasting more time.
He equipped Agamemnon’s Mask.
“Purification.”
WOONG!
Golden waves rippled from Zeke’s body and seeped into the mage.
“Arrghhhh!”
As Zeke expected, the mage felt intense pain from the purification light.
“ARRGHHHH!”
Zeke spoke to the mage again.
“Tell me about Abyss.”
“Arrghh! N-no!”
Zeke used the purification power more strongly.
The mage’s eyes rolled back and foam formed at his mouth.
“GURK! B-book of Death!”
“Book of Death?”
Suddenly something began writhing out of the mage’s eyes, mouth, and nose.
“Keeeek!”
Dozens of horrific worms burst out.
